IntroductionThe Chamber and Participation Team provides the core services that facilitate MPs' legislative and scrutiny work in the House of Commons Chamber, Westminster Hall, general committees and some related select committees, and engages the public with parliamentary business.
The Procedural Publishing Unit provides publishing services for teams right across parliament but with a focus on supporting the Commons Chamber.
The RoleThis role is part of a team providing high-quality publishing services to parliament (especially the House of Commons chamber).
This role provides technical expertise within the team, supporting colleagues. The post holder will propose new projects and work on existing projects aimed at further automating and improving the quality and efficiency of publishing workflows. You will research and advise on best practice, propose changes, produce demonstrations and, ultimately, train colleagues on improvements to workflows.
Some of the responsibilities for this role include:
  • Work with colleagues on data/content gathering and publishing workflows to improve the wider team's efficiency and effectiveness in delivering publications to agreed service level agreements - including helping to conceive and design new approaches.
  • Provide expertise in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to support publishing to the parliament website
  • Provide expertise in Adobe InDesign and Acrobat to support long-form text publishing projects - including troubleshooting issues with existing systems
  • Devise new workflow proofs-of-concept and demonstrations to present to senior colleagues
  • Support colleagues to develop the skills to work with new technology as part of publishing workflows, including delivering training and instruction where appropriate.
Skills And ExperienceTo be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
  • Understanding of processing structured (XML; JSON) and unstructured data, and how to transform that data to create documents for print and the web.
  • Ability to write scripts (in languages such as Python or JavaScript) to automate various tasks relating to data driven publishing, such as the retrieval of data from web APIs.
  • Track record of using publishing workflows incorporating Adobe InDesign (or similar) to produce a variety of outputs including PDF and HTML.
