Guilford County is Hiring a Building Maintenance Mechanic Near Greensboro, NC

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance of county buildings.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in class independently performs a variety of tasks associated with the maintenance, repair, and adjustment of electrical, plumbing, heating, air-conditioning, and related equipment, systems, and facilities. Work includes maintaining parking gate equipment, repairing electrical controls on equipment and assisting in the maintenance and repair of electrical, plumbing, and heating systems and equipment. Work also includes repairing motors, pumps, and other mechanical equipment. The employee performs work assignments independently but refers unusual work problems to supervisor for consideration and final determination. Work is performed under the supervision of the Assistant Operations Manager or the Maintenance Supervisor and is evaluated through inspection and quality of work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs plumbing repairs within the County Buildings; clears clogged commodes and drains; installs new plumbing fixtures and equipment; clears sewer lines with buildings. 
  • Maintain heating systems within County buildings; starts, adjusts, and repairs controls on oil and gas boilers; disassembles boiler controls and cleans for inspection.
  • Installs and repairs conduits, wiring, switches, circuit breakers, junction boxes, motors, fuses, fixtures, and controls and makes other electrical repairs.
  • Repairs and maintains central air-conditioning units; repairs and maintains air compressors, fans, motors, and controls; oils and greases bearings, etc.
  • Performs occasional acetylene and electrical welding of a routine nature.
  • Repairs motors, pumps, and generators; repairs washers, dryers, and other appliances; tunes up motors by adjusting or replacing carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, and spark plugs.
  • Assists other mechanics in their fields as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the maintenance requirements of public buildings.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems.
  • Ability to estimate material and labor needs for building repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees and building tenants.
  • Skill in the use of mechanical tools necessary in performing electrical, mechanical and building repair and maintenance work.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or a GED program and some combination of education and experience necessary to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this job classification. Education and or experience should be documented clearly in the application.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or a GED program with one to five years of direct experience in building maintenance, plumbing, electrical or mechanical work in a similar role.

Special Requirement 

  • Must have a valid driver's license required, must attain a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days after hire.
  • Subject to overtime, calls back to work for urgent/emergency situations and work during inclement weather.
  • Participation in a rotating on-call schedule is required.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, crawling, reaching and stretching of arms and body, walking up and down stairs.

Work Conditions : Work is performed inside and outside in tight places, unsanitary conditions, noisy equipment rooms, working on roof tops, exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials, working around heavy machinery and electrical voltage.

Driving is Essential 

Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver’s license and that the driving record is compatible with the county’s driving criteria.

If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County’s vehicle use policy.
