BASIC FUNCTION
Perform all laboratory procedures as assigned in a prompt, accurate and reliable manner according to the established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Collect samples in accordance with established practices. Perform clinical laboratory testing which involves the application of sophisticated analytical knowledge in a wide range of the Clinical Laboratory including, Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Immunohematology, Virology and Coagulation. In the performance of testing, skills of instrumentation use and maintenance, quality control, calibration, and microscopy are employed. The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MT) will also participate in supportive functions of teaching, troubleshooting, Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement, and problem resolution.
Major ResponsibilitiesCollect, receive, properly identify, evaluate integrity, and solve problems as related to specimens as they are processed for routine and emergent assays. Receive and process requests/orders from providers, departments, and clients for laboratory testing. Ability to evaluate the orders for accuracy, completeness, and medical necessity. Place orders in LIS in an efficient manner with accuracy to the test requested, ordering physician, date/time collection, diagnosis provided, and ordering/report location. Perform accurate analysis in a timely fashion with result data reported within defined criteria for quality. Follow critical value policy and lab testing protocols. Ability to perform testing with no direct supervision, minimal number of errors, and to perform work in a neat, legible manner to facilitate staff follow-up regardless of workload. Collection of legal blood alcohols, genetic tests, DOT and non-DOT drug screens and breath alcohols. Review current quality control data and patient results for acceptability. Recognize problem situations and initiate appropriate corrective action to maintain accuracy and precision of test methods. Follow through with documentation and communication to the Laboratory Manager. Analyze accurately and report result data to designated coordinator for proficiency surveys as demonstrated by acceptable evaluation of such data. Assist with survey preparation, distribution, and collation as assigned. Answer inquiries regarding test results and methodology, test specificity and sensitivity, and specific factors that can influence test results. Evaluate test results in context of disease processes and other laboratory data. Correlate results for quality assurance, recognize discrepancies, and perform confirmation of abnormal results. Operate/Maintain instrumentation and methods. Perform routine and non-routine maintenance on equipment as assigned, function as a lead operator on select assigned instruments. Review, write and/or revise procedures. Participate in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures. Assist in reagent/supply inventory. Use reagents and supplies in cost effective manner to reduce waste, reduce cost, and assure adequate supply of working reagents is available for use. Maintain accurate and timely records. Record proper documentation in appropriate logbooks, properly label reagents and supplies, complete and document technical competency on an annual basis. Participate in education, instruction, and professional development. Assist with teaching of students, employees, and other medical personnel. Demonstrate a continued interest in self-improvement, attend lab meetings, assume personal responsibility for maintaining skills and knowledge in low volume procedures. Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives. Perform duties and maintain confidentiality consistent with policies and outlined in the Compliance Plan.

Position QualificationsEducation and Learning:
RequiredBachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
Certification or eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency
Employee may not at any time have been or be excluded from participating in any federally funded program, including Medicare and Medicaid
RequiredWork Experience:
Current knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment expected
Desired
Previous laboratory experience is recommended and experience with Laboratory Information Systems is beneficial.
