GMS and its family of companies operate a network of nearly 300 building product distribution yards, and more than 100 tool sales and service centers, for customers across the U.S. and Canada. The Field Support Center in Tucker, Georgia serves each GMS location, providing the support needed to enable local teams to deliver outstanding service to contractors and builders in their local communities.
Position SummaryThe Director, Payroll and Tax, is responsible for overseeing the entire payroll process and ensuring compliance with tax regulations for the company and its subsidiaries. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills, capable of managing a team and collaborating with various departments to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing. The Director will also be responsible for tax reporting and compliance to optimize the company’s financial performance and ensure adherence to all relevant laws and regulations. In addition, the Director will recommend, implement, and promote payroll policies and procedures consistent with legal requirements and the culture of the organization.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Management:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll and tax professionals.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including HR, Finance, and subsidiaries.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives to improve payroll and tax processes.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for internal and external customers.
  • Create long-term and short-term strategic goals for continuous improvement of the payroll activities of the organization.
Payroll Management
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of payroll for all employees.
  • Ensure payroll is processed accurately and on time, complying with all federal, state and local regulations.
  • Manage payroll systems and vendor relationships, ensuring systems are up-to-date and effective.
  • Ensure maximum use of the company’s Human Capital Management System (HCM) capabilities to augment payroll efficiencies.
Tax Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local tax laws and regulations (GMS operates in almost all US states).
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of all payroll-related tax returns and reports.
  • Develop and implement tax strategies while working with the local subsidiaries to optimize company financials.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
Reporting And Analysis
  • Prepare and present regular reports on payroll and tax activities to senior management.
  • Analyze payroll data to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee and assist with facilitating union, prevailing wages, FLSA OT and piece/footage rate calculations.
  • Collaborate with finance to ensure accurate financial reporting and forecasting.
Policy Development
  • Develop and update payroll and tax policies and procedures.
  • Ensure policies are communicated effectively and adhered to across the company and subsidiaries.
Risk Management
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to payroll and tax processes.
  • Ensure proper internal controls are in place and functioning effectively.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in a similarly senior level payroll or tax role.
  • Minimum 10 years of strong, progressive ‘hands on’ payroll processing experience in multi-location environments with the use of prevailing wages, unions, and FLSA OT.
  • Multi state processing and tax experience.
  • Expert proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with Ceridian/Dayforce or UltiPro/Kronos a plus

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to remain in stationary position in an office environment: 80%
  • Will frequently move about inside the office to access office machinery, etc.
