Project Manager II (Contract)

Description

This contractor position is on a temporary basis supporting the L2LD project, initially at our Morenci mine site and then at other sites. It_ could evolve into a partially remote role once established, depending on project requirements _

Responsible for day-to-day management beginning in the early phases of project definition with project concept, detail design, execution planning, phasing, scheduling, constructability reviews, and continuing throughout the execution and commissioning phases of the project, with particular emphasis on jobsite health and safety, environmental protection and labor relations of major mining and metallurgical process facilities projects. The scope of this position includes all aspects of project management from early planning stages through field execution and commissioning activities, with hand-off to the site operations team for beneficial operation. Reports to the General Manager Site Sustaining Capital.

  • Responsible for execution of major mining and metallurgical process facilities projects by working with Corporate and Site based personnel to define project development opportunities and required production and process facilities necessary to achieve forecast production targets. Assembles required resources, both internal and external to ensure full and accurate definition of scope, estimate of cost and development of required schedules to effect the safe design, procurement and construction of required facilities.
  • Identifies all required engineering, procurement and construction phase activities that must be completed to ensure successful completion of the work in accordance with the requirements of FMMC and FMI. Interfaces closely with other FMI organizations (operating properties, supply chain and sourcing, finance, environmental, risk management, etc.) as well as site-based leadership, health and safety personnel and other involved organizations to ensure that work is executed in a manner consistent with the expectations of the operating property and in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
  • Works with corporate and site-based personnel to develop scope, estimate cost, and derive required schedules for the execution phase of major projects, ensuring that all aspects of work required to place new facilities into beneficial operation are included.
  • Secures required resources, both internal and external, necessary to accomplish required engineering analyses, geotechnical investigations, surveys, metallurgical testing, environmental support and related activities, and sources them as required either from within FMMC or by engaging third party engineering and technical services firms to ensure successful completion of the work. Thereafter ensures that necessary resources are in place to procure equipment and materials, and then contract for necessary services and construction support to effect its installation in the field and subsequent commissioning.
  • Organizes the project team and establishes productive working relationships and communications to ensure efficient prosecution of the work. Thereafter directs the activities of all resources involved in the project to ensure that deliverables are met in accordance with the defined schedule. Requires proper reviews (by both internal resources and third parties) of both in-progress work and that completed to ensure that the products of the various entities contributing to the work is of a quality and character that meets the requirements of FMMC and the site operations team.
  • Involves project team resources in all aspects of project planning, conceptual and detail engineering, procurement and contracting, field erection and equipment installation, commissioning and startup to ensure that the work is of a quality and character that meets the expectations of FMMC and the requirements of the operating division for which the work is being done.
  • Manages the project team, third party consultants and contractors to estimate cost, develop field execution strategies, and derive required schedules for the execution phase of major projects, with particular emphasis on constructability of facilities and compliance with HSEC guidelines. Coordinates same with site-based personnel as required. Ensures that a comprehensive QA/QC is in place to monitor quality of all aspects of the project.
  • Works with FMMC Project Controls teams to monitor the progress of the work and implement strategies to correct for deficiencies in budgetary compliance and on-time completion of assigned scope of work. Implements corrective strategies to realign the project with budget and schedule requirements.
  • Leads the collaboration with the project teams to develop and implement strategies to realign the project with the established budget and schedule.
  • Implements comprehensive health, safety and environmental programs that meet with the requirements and expectations of FMMC and FMI. Takes the lead role in ensuring that all entities contributing to the execution of the project do so in a manner that promotes safe and healthy workplace practices, in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and in compliance with all health, safety, environmental and community guidelines and requirements.
  • ·The Project Manager is accountable for all aspects of project execution, from the quality of the installation to the cost and schedule of its delivery, to the performance not only of the systems installed, but also of the resources that the Project Manager assembles to execute the work. Health, safety and environmental performance are measures that are particularly weighed in assessing a project manager's performance in project delivery.

Job Scope

  • Nature of work: Works on moderately complex issues, implements solutions through individual effort but may delegate more routine tasks to others
  • Level of interaction: Often collaborates with managers and/or functional or site leaders, EPCM, Contractors and has some interaction with external colleagues.
  • Autonomy/decision making: Works under limited supervision and has significant latitude to set objectives, priorities and timelines that may impact a group or functional area within the company.
  • Budgetary responsibility: Responsibility for project budget and schedule.
  • Managerial responsibility: Manages supervisors, managers, other senior level professional individual contributors, consultants, EPCM, and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in engineering or related field, and minimum eight (8) years’ experience with the practice, systems, processes and terminology of project and construction management OR
  • High School diploma or GED and a minimum thirteen (13) years progressive experience in the field, engaged directly in the practice, systems, processes and terminology of project and construction management
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of project management, engineering, project controls, contract administration, procurement, expediting, materials management (logistics), construction and contracting.
  • Proven experience in the management of mining, heavy industrial and capital projects with a value exceeding $500 million.
  • Work involves frequent travel to the site of work
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers in a business environment. MS Word, Excel, Outlook, essential

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior EPCM experience preferred with design office and field management
  • Heavy industrial construction project management experience
  • Experience in Lean Construction practices and Construction Planning
  • Solid background in heavy machinery installations
  • Understanding of Labor requirements and forecasting
  • Experience in setting KPI’s and tracking on a day-to-day basis
  • Predominant experience in field roles in all disciplines
  • Working as a team member (Client, EPCM & Contractors)
