The Information Technology (IT) Fellow is a full-time, one-year program designed to provide real-life experience in healthcare IT as part of Digital Technology Services (DTS) at Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH). Works on a variety of projects and initiatives, gaining exposure to different aspects of the HMH network/organization. The goal of the program is to develop skills and provide the experiences necessary to launch a career in healthcare IT. Rotates through three areas of DTS, spending approximately four months being guided and educated in each. Works with the program administrator to select areas of interest. Gains an in-depth understanding of each service line, department, and/or specialty area they are placed in. Will work closely with leadership on projects resulting in a positive impact on the quality of delivery by the service line, department, and/or specialty area. Areas of interest include but are not limited to: Clinical Informatics, Cloud and Core Infrastructure, Data and Analytics, Digital Engagement, Health Applications, and the Office of the Chief Digital Information Officer (CDIO). During the program, will receive guided professional development through monthly education courses. Courses address learning in leadership, administrative skills, healthcare industry knowledge, and general professional development. Will be guided and mentored throughout the program by multiple people, including senior leaders, the program manager, and an external coach.
ResponsibiltiesA day in the life of a Information Technology (IT) Fellow at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Perform tasks and projects as assigned by rotation leaders. A minimum of one project per rotation is expected. Projects may consist of needed deliverables, program strategies, and/or market/landscape assessments within each focus area.
  • Observe leaders and team members to gain knowledge of specific areas of DTS.
  • Participate in training and learning events specific to healthcare IT.
  • Participate in training and learning events geared toward professional development.
  • Work with a career coach to identify personal strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Apply knowledge learned in school and offer fresh perspectives.
  • Conduct report-outs of experiences and accomplishments to senior leadership after each rotation.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
QualificationsEducation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree plus be currently enrolled or be a recent graduate with a Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Healthcare Administration, or another similar/related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High degree of initiative and independence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred
  • Working knowledge of Google platforms.
  • Prior work experience in healthcare (i.e. internships, entry-level positions, professional positions, etc.).
  • Demonstration of leadership through community involvement or professional associations.
