What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Global Learning position at Hamilton College?
The Director of Global Learning, reporting to the Dean of Engaged Learning, is responsible for strategic leadership that promotes the global learning goals and mission of the college through management and development of international and select domestic study programs. The Director serves as liaison with academic programs/departments and the Global Education Advisory Committee, and as the primary liaison to international institutions and program providers on behalf of the college. The leadership role requires knowledge of standards of practice in the field of international education, ability to continuously respond to curricular needs of the college and new developments in study abroad academic programs, and the ability to anticipate emerging opportunities that contribute to the quality, breadth, and relevance of the college portfolio of global learning opportunities. In partnership with colleagues across campus, the Director focuses on efforts to:
- Administer the Curricular Integration Initiative in order to enrich the study abroad portfolio according to the priorities and preferences of engaged academic departments and programs,
- Provide high quality advising that helps students optimize a full spectrum of benefits (e.g., experiential learning, personal growth, career-related goals) pertaining to the study abroad experience.
- Establish learning outcomes through reflection and through the integration of international experiences in the undergraduate experience.
- Engage traditionally underserved students through special student-focused programs and events, dedicated advising to select constituents, and helping students access funding and related support
- Maintain a vital engagement in messaging the benefits and outcomes of international education through preparation of reports, articles, stories, web features, events and other outreach that showcase the importance of global education to the Hamilton mission
- Ensure that the college standards, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to study abroad are followed.
This is an exempt position with a pay range of $95,000 - $103,000.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Manage and Develop the Curricular Integration Initiative
- Manage and develop a portfolio of study abroad program development goals through the Curricular Integration Initiative
- Research and co-design new study abroad programming with an emphasis on research opportunities, access to summer funding, and post-baccalaureate opportunities.
- Provide opportunities and resources to department/program faculty to enhance faculty knowledge of available courses abroad that precede faculty site visits to select programs and to enhance faculty participation in study abroad advising
- Maintain and support the Curricular Integration Initiative by managing Foundation Reports, reports to academic leadership and summary reports, evaluative meetings with departments, and timely integration of new departments and programs into the initiative.
- Support Development of Faculty-led Short-Term Programs Abroad
- Manage the portfolio of approved JAN study experiences abroad through working with provider partners, admissions, the registrar’s office, orientation and advising staff, and others. Manage agreements and communication with provider partners and provide planned site visits for the purposes of integrating JANS into Hamilton college matriculation.
Promote Partnership and Collaboration
- Partner with campus staff advisors in ALEX, Career Development, Opportunity Programs and related student focused groups, e.g. Days-Massolo staff, International Student advisors, Student Affairs, Pre-Health Professions, Scholarships/Fellowships, experiential learning offices and other select staff, to ensure synergy and collaboration throughout the advising process and to ensure that Global Learning is advising in the best interest of the student
- Partner with faculty to ensure relevant integration of academic needs and study abroad plans of students.
- Oversee engagement and relationship management with Third Party Provider Partners
- Serve as Global Learning Representative on College Committees: Enrollment Management Committee, Global Education Advisory Committee, Selection Committee for International Mentored Summer Research Fellowships, Global Learning Contact with the Committee on Academic Standing
- Contribute to Essential Collaborative Efforts pertaining to study abroad and experiential learning: Represent Global Learning on ALEX Division and other college working groups and collaborative projects that pursue common goals, e.g., Experiential Learning, Advising, Pre-Health Professions, Enrollment Management, Career Development, Days-Massolo Center, HEOP/Questbridge/POSSE, Scholarships & Fellowships, Financial Aid
- Partner with relevant offices and departments on campus to provide opportunities to engage with global issues and bring awareness of global perspectives and communities both locally and abroad.
Provide Administrative Management and Leadership for Global Learning Office
- Maintain a Vital Engagement in Messaging Benefits and Outcomes of Global Learning
- Supervise and mentor Global Learning staff, ensuring effective team operations and professional development.
- Maintain dedicated staff meetings
- Support staff in strategic, outcomes-oriented participation in professional conferences and meetings
- Conduct periodic staff review in accordance with college timeline and procedures
- Engage Global Learning Staff in collaborative planning and insightful review of goals, issues, and opportunities
Manage the Timothy B. Kimball ‘04 Scholarship Fund
- Provide timely outreach to students most in need of scholarship support for study abroad for whom the Kimball Scholarship would enable partial financial support
- Annually award the Scholarship(s)
- Prepare annual reports to Donor Relations/Advancement on the recipients and benefits of the scholarship including student report and letter to donor family
Serve as primary liaison for Global Learning with Health and Safety Administrator
- Working with other designated administrators to serve as on call personnel
- Working with a consultant or Health and Safety Administrator to follow incident reporting protocols
- Collaborate with Health and Safety Administrator to train international program staff and faculty on Response Protocol and best practices in Incident Reporting, including faculty and personnel engaged in semester, yearlong and short-term faculty led programs abroad
- Working with Health and Safety personnel and Procurement ensure that program proposal criteria and timelines are manageable and that all risk considerations have been considered.
