TITLE: SCHOOL HEALTH LEADER
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Registered Nurse Licensure in good standing with the Ohio Board of Nursing
• Must be able to travel to various locations on a daily basis
• Maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification
REPORTS TO:
Supervisor, Intervention and Support Services
JOB SUMMARY:
To serve as the leader of the school health services program, to be a liaison to the building/district administrators and HCESC Nursing Supervisor, and to direct the functions of the School Health Associates (SHAs) for the purpose of establishing consistent, professional healthcare standards and practices thought the school/district.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. In coordination with the School Health Associates (SHAs) provides care for the acute and chronic health issues of students/staff, which includes but is not limited to: assessment, goal development, delivering appropriate interventions and evaluating outcomes of interventions, in accordance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act (ORC 4723), current emergency and nursing standards of care and HCESC nursing protocols.
2. Ensure adherence to the State of Ohio mandates regarding school health.
3. Conduct or coordinates professional development and training for the SHAs.
4. Serve as a representative of the Health Services staff at district level committees and is responsible for communicating health and wellness initiatives to the Health Services staff.
5. Serve as a consultant in the student education planning process where a student’s medical needs are included in the special education program.
6. In collaboration with building SHA, assess children and/or staff for common communicable and nuisance diseases. Recommend exclusion and readmission practices to the Building Principal in accordance with district policy and procedure and Health Department guidelines.
7. Coordinate with the SHAs to monitor immunization and Tuberculosis testing compliance of students and staff according to the Ohio Department of Health and other county clinic guidelines.
8. Demonstrate medical knowledge and skill in nursing techniques and performs skilled nursing procedures in a safe, competent, and efficient manner according to the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
9. Ensure SHAs maintain up to date student health records and related documentation of nursing care provided and activities conducted in the school (including third party billing as directed by district administrators).
10. Conduct health screenings, referrals, and appropriate follow up activities in collaboration with the SHAs.
11. In coordination with the SHAs, identify students who may benefit from referrals to health, community, and social service agencies and refer as necessary to appropriate resources.
12. Direct the SHAs to participate in health and emergency planning for individual students with medical needs and for the larger school community.
13. Participate in or advises building and/or district regarding health/safety materials, curricula, and wellness promotion activities for the school community in collaboration with the SHAs.
14. Follow all applicable laws governing nursing practice in the State of Ohio and standards of professional and ethical nursing practice and guidelines as defined by professional organizations including but not limited to the American Nurses Association, Ohio Board of Nursing, and HCESC policies and procedures.
15. Research and develop best practices for the health services program and communicates these to, and ensures compliance by, the SHAs.
16. Provide input to HCESC Nursing Supervisor regarding performance and evaluations of the SHAs and to provide recommendations for improvement.
17. Acquire and maintain current knowledge and competency in nursing practice related to school health issues.
18. Demonstrate effective communication skills with SHAs, students, staff and other members for the school community to help meet health needs in the school environment.
19. Understand and use technology, as available, to maximize efficiency and support professional responsibilities.
20. Perform other duties as assigned.
