Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full time Roadway Engineer position for our Peoria, IL office. Our new team member will be expected to take a leading role in the advancement of Hanson's technical abilities with local municipalities for a broad variety of infrastructure engineering projects.

Position Profile

This person is expected to work as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute infrastructure projects for a variety of clients. Many clients will be local municipalities and local governments. Expect to perform a key role on municipal roadway, intersection, utility, land acquisition, and drainage design projects. Projects often include non-auto users such as pedestrians, bicycles, and transit. Position requires the ability to serve as responsible design engineer for project components, assist in project procurement, and work with clients and contractors during construction. A component of the work includes construction observation and resident engineering duties. Expect to work on a variety of projects, interact with clients and contractors, and coordinate with multiple support staff locally and from other offices. It is important that this position can support project teams from initial planning through design to construction. There may be opportunities to engage on projects with state departments of transportation, toll authorities, aviation clients, rail, and other private clients.

A Day in Life of a Roadway Engineer at Hanson

Here’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  • Assist in leading technical aspects of municipal/local government transportation projects primarily in northern Illinois. Experience with municipal water, sewer, and/or drainage projects is desirable, but not required.
  • Perform and review complex engineering calculations.
  • Prepare and oversee
  • engineering design/analyses
  • plans/construction contract documents; and
  • author technical documents such as engineering reports and special provisions.
  • Attend public meetings and board meetings.
  • Assist with grant applications.
  • Collaborate with senior technical staff and other project disciplines.
  • Provide direction and mentoring to engineering support staff.
  • Prepare calculations, quantity takeoffs and opinions of probable cost.
  • Managing project performance for roadway tasks (staffing, budget, schedule, and quality assurance).
  • Visit project sites to review existing conditions, identify potential challenges, and develop alternative solutions and recommendations.
  • Assist agencies with the advertising and bidding process.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Perform construction observation and construction management.
  • Assist with project/contract proposals and presentations for project pursuits.
  • Assist in development of scope/fee documents required for technical tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For

We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • 5 years of total experience.
  • 1 years of experience on municipal related projects.
  • Illinois P.E. or eligible to obtain within 6 months.

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with IDOT and other agencies’ permit requirements.
  • Experience with IDOT BLR and BDE requirements.
  • Experience with MFT and other types of funding sources.
  • Experience with Microstation and OpenRoads software is required.
  • Experience with one or more of the following is desirable: AutoCad, Corridor Modeler, Civil3D, Autoturn, signal warrants, HCS

Soft Skills:

  • Mentoring and guiding junior technical staff.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to present complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
  • Must be able to build effective relationships with internal and external client bases.
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.
  • Participation with professional or technical organizations.
  • Ability to assist on project pursuits.

  • Candidate must be willing to accept occasional out-of-town travel assignments.
  • Must be willing to work overtime to meet project demands when needed.
