Harford County, MD is Hiring an ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT I (GRANT/FT/BENEFITS) Near Bel Air, MD

Nature of Work

The Administrative Assistant I is responsible for performing routine clerical and administrative functions such as drafting correspondence, scheduling appointments, organizing and maintaining paper and electronic files, providing information to callers and other support work for the Department. Harford County Government Core Values are essential to successful job performance. This position, as with all positions in Harford County, is accountable for integrating Core Values in the execution of responsibilities.

Examples of Duties

(The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in the class. Positions may require some or all of these examples depending on the organization of work within the department. The list is not inclusive. A position may require duties not listed, if necessary, to accomplish the work of the department.)
  • Assist all divisions within the Housing & Community Services Department as necessary; may include some evening or weekend events.
  • Performs as a receptionist. Answers telephones and takes messages; greets visitors and clients; provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to appropriate individuals.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor with a diverse population.
  • Receives and answers inquiries from employees and the public in person and on the phone.
  • Maintains schedules, records, and accounts as assigned.
  • Manages paper or electronic filing systems, recording information, updating paperwork or maintaining documents, such as attendance records, correspondence, or other material.
  • Composes correspondence. May take and transcribe dictation.
  • Prepares reports as assigned; gathers and compiles statistical data and prepares reports of findings. Enters and retrieves information using data entry devices, as required.
  • Picks up, processes and/or distributes mail; may replenish office supplies and files.
  • May be assigned to a specific function of a regular and recurring nature, such as processing applications, requests, and other actions for departmental services, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Must possess a working knowledge of the field of assignments with the ability to sufficiently perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by the examples of duties.
  • Good knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, filing, recording, telephone techniques and office equipment, to include knowledge of personal computer operations;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately in the English language utilizing both oral and written means;
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard at a net speed of 45 w.p.m.; to perform clerical/typing/keyboard tasks quickly and accurately;
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and simple reports;
  • Ability to maintain a good working relationship with coworkers and the general public;
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time; to bend stoop, reach and lift light objects;
  • Ability to drive a County vehicle in carrying out some assignments, if applicable.
EDUCATION:
Possession of a high school or vocational-school diploma or GED Certificate, which has included or been supplemented by a course in typing.
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years experience in performing responsible clerical work which has included computer operation and interaction with the public.
LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Class "C" driver's license with no more than three (3) points. Please be advised this position requires a valid driver's license. Your application will not be considered if you fail to include the full driver's license number on the electronic application.

Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations, and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.
