Harlem Commonwealth Council is Hiring an After-School Program Director Near New York, NY

Position Overview

The After-School Program Director will be responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of our after-school program. This will involve developing and implementing program activities, supervising staff, ensuring the safety and well-being of program participants, and maintaining positive relationships with parents, schools, and community partners.

Harlem Commonwealth Council, Inc. (HCC) is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) local development organization dedicated to broad-based economic improvements to Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, as well as to their vibrant multi-cultural communities. Since 1967, the Harlem Commonwealth Council has served the greater Harlem community by implementing several successful ventures and programs that promote self-sufficiency and create stability through economic development projects, academic empowerment, and entrepreneurial support. Located in the heart of Harlem, HCC has a history of responding to the community’s needs. Initially, the organization’s Economic Development focus was real estate development. Currently, HCC’s Economic Development strategy includes helping launch and build businesses and assisting Upper Manhattan residents to become economically independent through training and education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the entire HCC's SONYC after-school program
  • Oversee tutoring and childcare for children from Pre-K to 8th grade during after-school hours from 2 to 6 p.m
  • Review and recommend any necessary changes to school policies that impact student learning outcomes
  • Manage student enrollment, ensure the recruitment of qualified teaching staff, schedule classes, address disciplinary concerns, assess instructors' performance, and ensure that all learning materials and services are available to students and instructors
  • Work with community organizations and businesses to establish partnerships that will help to enhance organizational educational programs
  • Work closely with on-site social workers to identify at-risk students and provide necessary support services
  • Ensure that the documentation for the CPR safety certifications of instructors and counselors is appropriately overseen
  • Provide leadership in developing employee policy and procedure handbook, parent manual, program goals, and objectives in adherence to SACC 414 regulations and guidelines
  • Design, implement, and monitor an effective annual CYS program plan to ensure the achievement of stated outcomes, compliance with relevant policies and procedures, and professional service delivery within budgetary guidelines
  • Provides leadership, direction, supervision, mentorship, and support for both instructors and students for the purpose of evaluating relevant programs/services, ensuring compliance with relevant requirements, taking appropriate actions, and/or responding to requests
  • Collect, maintain, report, and analyze data as required by HCC, DOE, DOH, DYCD
  • Spread awareness about the SONYC program to specific groups through marketing and networking initiatives
  • Assist with the department's hiring effort
  • Train new employees, observe their teaching techniques, and provide opportunities for professional development

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, skills, and abilities)

  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational or community-based setting
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and best practices
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with local education systems and resources
  • Ability to pass a background check

Qualifications:

  • At least 4-5 years of relevant work experience in the above mentioned areas
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or a related field

Salary:

  • Salary commensurate with experience
  • Range: $65,000 - $75,000
  • Full benefits package
