Harley Haddow is Hiring a Principal Mechanical Engineer Near Edinburgh, IN

Our Edinburgh office is situated in the heart of the bustling city centre, with panoramic views of the castle, gardens and Princes Street below. The office is always alive with activity as it houses a 65-strong team consisting of mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and support teams. The office’s open plan kitchen and staff break out area often plays host to our team’s socialising time, whether it’s over a morning coffee, lunch or after work unwind.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer with 4 years proven experience to join our team, leading the delivery and project management of Mechanical Services Design on assigned projects. This role involves a high-level understanding of all major MEP projects, maintaining and improving the quality and efficiency of our designs, and overseeing the post-contract implementation. You will supervise junior engineering staff, assist in their development, and act as the lead consultant, ensuring that M&E requirements are communicated and delivered effectively within Harley Haddow.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

- Lead and manage the delivery of Mechanical Services Design on projects.

- Supervise junior engineering staff, assisting in their personal and technical development.

- Act as the lead consultant, providing M&E representation and input at key project stages.

Concept and Detailed Design:

- Lead the development of M&E Services strategies and concept designs as part of RIBA Stages 1, 2 & 3.

- Manage the production of scheme design drawings and detailed Mechanical Services design.

- Prepare outline M&E specifications and assist in BCIS elemental M&E cost plans.

- Ensure project delivery meets deadlines and quality standards.

Project Management:

- Manage multiple projects, ensuring delivery dates and quality criteria are met.

- Monitor and invoice project fees.

- Represent Harley Haddow at site meetings, ensuring the smooth flow of information.

- Assist Project QS in cost control and final account settlement.

- Ensure project closure and resolution of all defects.

Software Proficiency:

- Expert in using design software including CAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Hevacomp, IES, Chorus, and Microsoft Word/Excel.

- Develop the abilities of Assistant and Apprentice Engineers in using all software packages.

Client Interaction:

- Represent Harley Haddow through direct client contact and other design team members.

- Prepare and deliver project presentations to client teams.

- Develop and maintain strong client relationships to ensure repeat business.

Management and Commercial Duties:

- Assist TDs and Directors with programme management, change control, and fee bids.

- Organize and chair Mechanical team meetings, reviewing workload and fees.

- Take a holistic view of office workload and costs.

QA Procedures:

- Ensure QA procedures are followed and documented.

- Ensure all work is QA checked before being issued to external parties.

Performance Expectations:

- Scheme design project work: 20% of time

- Detailed Design project work: 30% of time

- Post Contract duties/meetings: 20% of time

- Learning and Development: 5% of time

- General Office: 5% of time

- Management Duties: 5% of time

- Commercial Duties: 5% of time

- QA Duties: 5% of time

- Client Development: 5% of time

Role Requirements:

Qualifications:

- Degree qualified with incorporated/chartered status or working towards chartered status.

- Member of an appropriate institution.

Knowledge & Experience:

- Demonstrable experience in project management, delivery, and quality.

- Strong client-facing and people management skills.

- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and provide engineering and management solutions.

- Valid UK Driving Licence (preferable).

- Willingness to travel to meetings and projects as necessary.
