Harris County is Hiring an Intern, Outreach - Community Health Worker Near Houston, TX

HCPH provides a multitude of services such as medical and dental services, community programming, and health education for the approximately 2.3 million people in unincorporated Harris County. Through its core values of innovation, engagement, and health equity, HCPH strives to bring meaningful solutions to public health issues while keeping Harris County healthy and vibrant.Position Overview:Under the direct supervision of the Outreach Manager, Preceptor, Team Leads and CHW’s, the Community Outreach Intern is responsible for supporting Harris County Public Health’s outreach and education activities. The position will be both working out in the field and at various assignments within Harris County and in the office collaboratively building out projects for the team. The Community Outreach team is grant-funded, the Community Health Intern will perform duties based on the CDC CHW grant deliverables. In year 1 CHWs will build internalcapacity, and in years 2 and 3 CHWs will focus on building external CHW capacity related to improving the CHW infrastructure and resilience for Harris County.Intern Deliverables:

  • Interns will deliver a presentation encompassing a topic of their choice which aligns with the CDC CHW grant deliverables and share their experiences within the outreach team, and other potential strategies the team can explore.

  • Interns will each join an internal outreach taskforce and be asked to provide potential partnerships and canvassing locations accordingly
  • Interns will participate in one “In the News” session in which they will research a current trend or topic and present a brief 3 – 5-minute presentation during the weekly all staff meeting.
  • Interns will have the opportunity to shadow CHWs, CHW Leads, Team Leads, and Leadership
  • Deliverable will include attending regular meetings and following up on any action items as necessary.
  • Interns will collaborate with workshop planning teams to create workshops in line with CDC CHW grant deliverables and present to entire team for feedback.Intern Goals & Learning Objectives:After the duration of the semester, interns will have gained:
  • A deep understanding of the role of Community Healthcare Worker’s in community health and wellness.
  • Knowledge of public health systems and Harris County Public Health Programs.
  • Experience in outreach, community engagement, resource navigation, and public health education.
  • Understand and develop strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Learning how to develop and maintain partnerships and leverage community partners to have greater reach in the community.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • This is an unpaid intern position
  • Internship Time Frame: June 3, 2024 – August 9, 2024
  • Number of hours per week: 10-35, in-office
Work Environment:
  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands:

  • This is a largely sedentary role; however, some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
