POSITION SUMMARY:

The Family & School Liaison assists with communication between students, families, and the school in academic, social, and emotional development; serves as a cultural advocate between the families and school personnel; conducts outreach through a variety of communications to empower families to be actively engaged in their children’s education; collaborates with colleagues to design, promote, and implement high impact family engagement strategies during the school day and after school. Assists with communication between students, families and the school in academic, social, and emotional development while maintaining confidentiality in all matters. Maintains professional relationships with staff, families and students, and may represent the school at community and civic events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduate from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a Bachelors degree in social services, psychology or related field.
  2. Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and learning in a project-based environment.
  3. Strong communication skills and the ability to guide 9th-12th grade students through complex problems as they develop new skills and understanding
  4. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  5. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  6. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  9. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  10. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Communicates/explains school rules, procedures, schedules, and curriculum to English Learner students and their families.
  2. Conducts an orientation upon admission or within the first week of admission to new English Learner students and their families, and provides ongoing support throughout the year.
  3. Provides translation and interpretation services for families of English Learners and all school personnel.
  4. Assists school staff in coordinating interpretation/translation needs in other target languages.
  5. Utilizes interpretive equipment for interpreting at school wide functions.
  6. Collaborates with school personnel and families to facilitate understanding of report cards, any generated forms, disciplinary actions taken by the school, attendance issues, regulations, etc.
  7. Collaborates with school staff to maintain positive and informed communication with English Learner students and their families.
  8. Assists with developing and promoting family engagement activities.
  9. Conducts Home Visits as needed and/or coordinates and assists teachers with Home Visits.
  10. Assists other schools upon request and as schedule permits.
  11. Other Responsibilities, not limited to:
  12. Attends school board meetings to provide translation services for students and their families. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  13. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  14. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  15. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  16. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  17. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  18. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
