Harrisonburg City Public Schools is Hiring a JROTC Senior Army Instructor - HHS (2023-2024 School Year) Near Harrisonburg, VA

250 Days

POSITION SUMMARY:

Serves as the department chairperson and chief instructor of the JROTC unit. The Senior Army Instructor is responsible for the overall management of the JROTC unit at the high school. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Retired from the United States Army as a commissioned officer (Warrant Officer through Colonel). 
  2. Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  3. Meet the eligibility and qualification standards of paragraph 4-5, United States Army Cadet Command Regulation 145-2 and be certified by US Army Cadet Command.
  4. Demonstrate the professional ability to lead, motivate, and influence young men and women to learn and develop leadership, self-reliance and discipline, responsiveness to constituted authority, and attributes of good citizenship and patriotism.
  5. Possess or qualify for a Technical Professional License from Virginia Department of Education with endorsement in JROTC Instruction.
  6. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  7. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  8. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  11. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  12. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for the daily operation of the JROTC program relating to the administration, control, and training of JROTC Cadets according to school rules, regulations, and customs. 
  2. Maintain good relations with school authorities, faculty, and the student body.
  3. Communicate with parents of all Cadets experiencing academic or behavioral challenges and outstanding accomplishments.
  4. Primary Hand Receipt Holder and maintain accountability of all equipment in accordance with US Army regulations.
  5. Ensure the cadets have the authorized and necessary clothing and equipment to perform as Cadets.
  6. Teach the JROTC curriculum using the JROTC Curriculum Manager and the associated texts as outlined in the JROTC Program of Instruction.
  7. Work with Cadets in the conduct of meetings and boards.
  8. Mentor and train cadets on all aspects of drill and ceremony and color guard in accordance with Field Manual 3-21.5.
  9. Serve as a member of school committees as required.
  10. Attend annual JROTC Cadet Challenge Leadership (JCLC) training.
  11. Maintain involvement in the school community by attending social events, athletic contests, PTSA, and faculty meetings.
  12. Maintain liaison with veterans and civic organizations.
  13. Operate classroom technology in the teaching of the curriculum, i.e. Classroom Performance System (CPS), Curriculum Manager (CM), Walk and Talk Interactive White Board, and Mobile Interactive White Boards (MOBI).
  14. Operate the JROTC Command Information Management System (JCIMS) and the JROTC Unit Management System (JUMS).
  15. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  16. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  17. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  18. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  19. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  20. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  21. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and the school community. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
