Job Summary:

The Division Chair is responsible for leading his/her respective division to provide

quality curriculum, instruction, and assessment in every classroom; prepare students for their postsecondary endeavors; implement systems of support, and manage division functions.

Qualifications:

Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for appropriate license

Evaluation:

Building Principal. Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Staff.

Terms of Employment:

This is a 9-month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision and Evaluation

  • Visits classrooms regularly to monitor instruction and implementation of the District-approved curriculum.
  • Evaluates teaching staff using a District-approved evaluation plan.
  • Makes recommendations to the principal on hiring, retaining, or releasing department members.
  • Encourages teachers to self-evaluate using coaching, action research, video recording, or other methods that promote reflection.
  • Confers and coaches teachers in the division to help them improve instructional strategies.
  • Approves requests for professional development and coursework in a manner that promotes improvement.
  • Encourages teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving.
  • Assists substitute teachers.
  • Assigns and assists student teachers.
  • Prepares and manages the division budget.

Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

  • Provides leadership in the development and review of the division curriculum including the promotion of new courses and the elimination of obsolete courses.
  • Ensures that teachers in the department teach district approved curriculum.
  • Leads the textbook/instructional materials selection process.
  • Demonstrate and develop quality instructional methods, strategies, and pedagogy in division classrooms.
  • Utilizes the District Instructional Framework.
  • Provides leadership and support the PLC process in departments.
  • Supports and develops opportunities for rigorous coursework i.e. AP, Honors, Dual Credit.
  • Understands and promotes quality assessment practices.
  • Collaborates with District Team Leaders with vertical alignment of the curriculum.
  • Ensures that the district curriculum in their division prepares students for postsecondary endeavors.
  • Ensures that teachers utilize available technology to enhance the curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Student Growth and Development

  • Collaborates with division teachers and student services personnel to ensure appropriate interventions are in place to support student progress and success.
  • Leads process of using student achievement data to establish goals and targets for improvement.
  • Requires that curricular and instructional decisions be based on student needs as defined by data and students’ postsecondary plans.
  • Supports the implementation and use of AVID strategies

Professional Development

  • Leads division toward continuous improvement by expanding content and pedagogy.
  • Supports and encourage teachers toward professional growth and improvement.
  • Models professional growth and development.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues, including the ability to create and nurture a professional community of adult learners
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Proven ability to design and deliver quality professional development for teachers
  • Proven ability in using formative assessment and student-level data to guide instructional decisions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Common Core Standards
  • Demonstrated expertise in oral and written communication
  • Strong interpersonal skills including effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus, promoting initiatives, and conveying expectations
  • Models continual improvement, demonstrates lifelong learning, and applies new learning to help all students achieve, and maintains confidential, collegial relationships with teachers

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of this position include frequent sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Dependent on class/student assignment the employee may occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds. Repetitive bending at the waist as well as kneeling, stooping, crouching to assist students is also required. Employees may reach overhead as well as above the shoulders and horizontally.
