The Nagashima Lab in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University is seeking a Laboratory Technician (Lab Tech) to join our team to explore a wide variety of biological questions. The Lab Tech will be involved in funded research projects to unveil the interaction between the host immune system and the microbiome. We are primarily looking to hire a person who can provide bacterial molecular biology support and analyze the mouse immune system for several ongoing projects in the lab that are focused on the immune-cell-microbiome interaction. The person ideally should have at least one year of research experience and be proficient in performing immune cell analysis and molecular biology techniques such as multi-color flow cytometry, mouse dissection, bacterial culture, and genetic modification of bacteria. This is a one year term position with an option for renewal based on funding.
Position Description
  • Cloning and culturing of human-associated bacteria
  • Isolation of immune cells from the gut, skin and spleen of mice
  • Analysis and sorting of immune cells using multi-color flow cytometry
  • Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of results
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research
  • Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate and post-doctoral individuals. Make recommendations on the research design and direction.
  • Plan and coordinate an experiment from beginning to end
  • Responsible for interpretation of data and findings and maintaining detailed records of experiments and outcomes, suggesting modifications to existing procedures when needed
  • May also be required to recommend changes in protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems
  • Must keep an accurate laboratory notebook for all studies
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed
  • Help orient and train new staff or students as needed
Basic Qualifications
  • One year of laboratory experience
  • Relevant coursework and internships may count towards lab experience
Additional Qualifications And Skills
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred, preferably in immunology, biology, biochemistry, or a related field
  • Skills in molecular biology and cell culture are preferred

Work Format DetailsThis position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable).
