Position Description
A position for a full-time research assistant is available in a laboratory studying the molecular mechanisms of the mammalian circadian clock.
The Weitz lab uses molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and structural biology to investigate the timekeeping mechanism of the mammalian circadian clock. The focus of our efforts at present is to understand the circadian clock in terms of the integrated functions of its handful of multi-protein machines, recently characterized in our laboratory. This effort is principally based on the purification of endogenous circadian clock protein complexes from mouse tissues and their biochemical analysis and structural study by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).
The research assistant will help manage our mouse colonies and satellite animal facility and be responsible for some general laboratory management. There will also be opportunities to perform biochemistry experiments and learn about cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structural biology. The exact level of responsibility and mix of duties will depend on the interests and experience of the applicant. Candidates are expected to have worked in a biological research laboratory or facility full-time for at least one year, and prior experience in mouse colony management is preferred.
Typical duties:
  1. Manages our mouse colonies (setting up crosses, genotyping, overseeing animal health).
  2. Orders reagents and supplies and manages laboratory chemical and supply inventories.
  3. As a member of a team, may assist in designing, performing and interpreting biochemical experiments (optional).
