Department: Zoo Education

Location: Hattiesburg Zoo

Shift: Full-time: This is a structured schedule which may require a mix of weekdays, weekends, evenings and holidays as needed to provide the best opportunity for establishing and improving long-term patterns for excellent guest education experiences.

Reports to: Director of Conservation and Education

S ummary: The Education Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, development, implementation, oversight, and evaluation of assigned Hattiesburg Zoo education experiences. These responsibilities include but are not limited to the Field Trip Program, Summer Camps, various education events, and any other programs given to the coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the planning, development, implementation, oversight and evaluation of all Hattiesburg Zoo education programming (with a special emphasis on field trips). This includes, but is not limited to teaching classes, giving tours, evaluating programs, writing curriculum, researching content, creating presentations and static displays.
  • Handles various species for interactive guest learning experiences, ensuring the safety of the guests and animals.
  • Assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of Zoo education and experiences.
  • Develop new educational events for the Zoo while maintaining and improving existing events. This includes but is not limited to Earth Day, Story Times, Sensory Days, Science Saturdays, and others.
  • Works to ensure children of all ages are enthralled by the creativity and quality of the educational programming of the Zoo.
  • Works with all departments for long-term improvements of the Zoo
  • Conducts work to best serve the guest experience.

Qualification Requirements

  • Strong background in education programming.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience working with exotic animals preferred.
  • Ability to promote and support the company’s vision.
  • Commitment to excellence in education.
  • Ability to assess concerns and problem solve expeditiously.
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work on a team involving several departments.
  • Possesses the ability to adapt curriculum and presentation style to various demographics.
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license.

Education and Work Experience

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related course of study.
  • Mississippi Educator Licensure preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong passion for conservation education.
  • Must have ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  • Must be prepared to work a flexible schedule including holidays.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated focus on continuous improvement.
  • Able to function independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment.
