Reports to: Executive Director, Special Education

Primary PurposeDirect the special programs to ensure provision of needed services for special needs students. Work to ensure that all programs meet the needs of all students and ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local requirements.
QualificationsEducation/Certification:Master’s degree
Valid Texas licensure as a speech-language pathologist, preferred
Valid teaching certification with special education endorsement, preferred
Special Knowledge/SkillsSignificant experience in Special Education
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to interact with diverse populations
Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
Ability to work cohesively on an interdisciplinary team
Familiarity with relevant special education laws, regulations, and guidelines
ExperienceBilingual (English/Spanish) oral and written communication skills preferred
Three (3) years’ experience of teaching or related experience in special education, preferably as a speech/language pathologist
Major Responsibilities And DutiesInstructional and Program Management
  • Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and/or regulations; and addressing other duties and processes required to maintain the district’s program of services.
  • Establish procedures to supervise, monitor, and facilitate special education programs.
  • Participate in the evaluation of special education department staff (Data: actual appraisals).
  • Facilitate team members with needed evaluations, therapy, consultation, etc. as well as participating and/or providing in professional development on the campus or district-wide.
  • Ensure special education handbook is updated annually.
  • Manage district Special Education programs and services.
  • Act as the liaison with Region 13 other district staff, serving as a resource of information regarding special education programs and services.
  • Ensure students are receiving FAPE in the least restrictive environment
  • Analyze data, updating programs, program use, monitoring programs / services, responding to others and consulting with program personnel
Policy, Reports, and Law
  • Maintain knowledge of updates in special education law and regulations.
Budget and Inventory
  • Administer team budget responsibly.
Personnel Management
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of personnel, and make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
Professionalism, Morale, and Team Building
  • Exhibit poise, self-control, and accept constructive criticism.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude toward others. Treat other staff with respect and dignity.
  • Interact with others effectively, and respond to customer needs in a courteous, respectful manner. Answer all phone calls and emails within 24 hours.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Foster collegiality and team building within the team and department. Work collaboratively with the department to develop a common vision of excellence and to ensure attainment of team, department, and district goals.
  • Proactively manage time to fulfill expectations and requirements of the assigned job.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing Special Education Staff.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
