Job Description: Hazen and Sawyer is seeking a detail-oriented Wastewater Engineer with 10 to 15 years of experience in design and project management of municipal wastewater projects. Experience should encompass all phases of design, including conceptual/feasibility evaluations, project management, preparation of design reports, permitting, development of construction drawings and specifications, and support of construction services. Candidate should have extensive wastewater facility design experience. The position will lead to an increasing level of client development and management commensurate with experience, supported by our local office and firm-wide technical resources. Candidate will work with local and regional staff to grow the wastewater practice in an emerging region. The position includes delivering public sector wastewater facilities planning and design projects. In your role you will plan, develop, coordinate, and direct at least one large project and/or several smaller projects simultaneously. You will guide and/or prepare facility assessment and design reports, perform design calculations, perform process and/or hydraulic modeling, select and size equipment, prepare design documents and construction documents, support construction phase services both in office and in the field. Field work and site visits from planning through construction may require occasional travel. You will support and mentor designers and engineers and will be supported by local and regional office leadership and technical staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Project management, preparation of assessment and design reports, performing design calculations, cost estimating, permitting, equipment sizing/selection, and preparation of construction documents for municipal wastewater facilities.
  • Field work and site visits from planning through construction as required with occasional travel.
  • Business development activities including making site visits to pre-position for projects, participating in proposal preparation and project interviews, developing scope, schedule, and budget for approved pursuits, and leading pursuits for wastewater projects.
  • Assist the Salt Lake City Operations Manager in recruiting staff to grow and strengthen Hazen’s wastewater practice in Utah.
  • Supervise and mentor designers and engineers

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • 10 to 15 years of experience in delivering wastewater projects for municipal clients
  • Utah PE or licensed PE in another state with ability to obtain Utah PE within 12 months of transfer date
  • Proficient in all computer software typically used (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Experience delivering wastewater facility projects from preliminary design through construction
  • Documented experience managing multiple successful project teams delivering high quality projects while meeting schedule and budget goals
  • Experience supervising, coordinating, mentoring, and reviewing work by staff
  • Experience successfully estimating workload and developing schedules
  • Experience communicating and coordinating with clients
  • Experience supporting proposal preparation and participating in interviews
  • Engagement with professional societies and similar organizations

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience managing projects with fees of $2M or more
  • Experience negotiating multiple contracts with clients
  • Experience recruiting staff
  • Engagement in professional society leadership roles
  • Familiarity with CADD, GIS, Revit, and/or other software

Education Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, construction management, or relevant science or math degree
