Job Summary and Qualifications

Coordination of the Sterile Processing Department in collaboration with the Sterile Processing Manager. Coordinates and facilitates daily operations between the OR, Sterile Processing and Vendors. Insures that the OR has what they need for their procedures on time, facilitates changes in the schedule keeping Sterile Processing updated on changing needs. Makes recommendations for tray changes, updates and surgical instrument purchases. Provides education for the SPD staff on surgical procedures, new products and changes. Communicates effectively with both the OR and SPD. Assists with tracking the Key Process Indicators. Has direct responsibility for reducing immediate use sterilization. Provides customer service to our providers facilitating their needs.


Job Specific Duties:

  • Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facility, in accordance with The Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards.
  • Properly handles, decontaminates, assembles, sterilizes and returns for use all instrumentation in accordance with the above organizational standards.
  • Works with CNCs to maintain preference cards and learn multiple specialty instrumentation.
  • Point of contact for OR staff for in room assistance and instrumentation needs.
  • Accurate and timely reporting of shift details to incoming shift staff and Lead Technician.
  • Performs inventory replacement procedures, transports instrumentation to OR as needed.
  • Supports daily operations of any activities that pertain to the processing of reusable instrumentation.
  • Communicates with SPD staff and OR staff to ascertain that pre-case needs are met, resolve any outstanding issues and offer alternatives if necessary.
  • Reports broken instrumentation, and provides vital communication to team leadership and/or manager.
  • Demonstrates consistent success in working, communicating with, and mentoring diverse staff.
  • Communicates in a professional manner to all staff and facility employees.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of instrumentation in multiple specialty areas.
  • Completes documentation for inventory and equipment service requests.
  • Regularly meets with OR staff and surgeons to ensure needs are being met and prioritiezed.
  • Verified availability of instrumentation for next day cases and weekend cases.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

Associates Degree or equivalent from 2 year technical school required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:

At least 2 years of previous SPD experience, or similar clinical experience required.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

Demonstrated communications and customer service skills, success in organizing work and ability to multi-task. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to read, write and understand written and oral instructions.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Certification in sterile processing or surgical technology required.
