Pay Rate: $56 / hour

Minimum QualificationsPossession of either a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in epidemiology, Doctoral degree in Medicine (MD), Osteopathy (DO), Dental Surgery/Medicine (DDS/DDM/DMD), or Veterinary Medicine (DVM); AND two years of professional experience investigating disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system;
or
Possession of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in a biological science
such as biology, genetics, nursing or virology; AND either a Master of
Public Health (MPH) degree or Master of Science (MS) degree in
epidemiology; AND two years of professional experience investigating
disease outbreaks, designing and conducting epidemiologic studies, or
designing and maintaining a disease surveillance system.
Role Description
This is professional scientific work in public health epidemiology within the Department of Health.
An employee in this job directs epidemiological investigations for public health programs on a statewide basis in the Bureau of Epidemiology.
Work involves providing consultative scientific and technical expertise in the analysis and interpretation of epidemiological data and in the control of infectious, chronic, environmental and other types of community health threats.
Work also includes developing statewide plans, policies and procedures for epidemiology, disease control and related issues.
Work may include managing and advising on the collection and analysis of statewide epidemiologic data.
Work may also include coordinating and advising on the direction of statewide programs for preventive medicine, public health education, or other assigned public health services related to epidemiology.
Work is performed with independence under the general direction of an Epidemiologist Supervisor or higher-level administrator, and reviewed for achievement of established objectives.
Work may include developing, refining or enhancing existing surveillance capacity and activities to create a more sustainable infectious disease surveillance system.
Work may include conducting data analyses, interpreting and disseminating results.
Work may include managing data from surveillance, disease investigations or other sources.
Work may include reporting infectious diseases surveillance data through the PA-NEDSS.
Work may include reviewing surveillance data daily to identify trends that diverge from established baseline information.
Work may include providing oversight and technical support including travelling to outbreak investigations sites during case and disease outbreak investigation.
Work may include investigating diseases to determine cause and risk factors, progress, life cycle, or mode of transmission.
Work may include planning and directing studies to investigate human diseases, preventive methods, and treatments for disease.
Work may include conducting the use of reports identifying and analyzing outbreak investigations and infection control issues using case-control or cohort study methodologies.
Work may include providing expert consultative advice to medical providers in the Commonwealth in the design, implementation, and utilization of surveillance systems.
Work may include providing expertise in the design, management and evaluation of study protocols and health status questionnaires, sample selection and analysis.
Work may include investigating diseases involves the collection and analysis of health data through field research, observation, questionnaires and studies.
Work may include recommending evidence-based interventions and control measures in response to epidemiology findings.
Work may include supporting prevention and educational activities for infectious disease trend analysis, prevention and control.
Work may include analyzing, interpreting and summarizing disease data in a timely manner. Ensure that surveillance data are reviewed on a daily basis to identify unusual disease trends; monitor and take steps to correct surveillance system problems.
Work may include analyzing data reports from data submitters using SAS, SPSS and other tools for epidemiological data analysis, to manipulate, clean, tabulate, and analyze large datasets of statewide data.
Work may include using a variety of statistical software to analyze the information and report the findings, which can take the form of meetings or presentations to the senior leadership (i.e Bureau Director, Deputy Secretary and Secretary of Health).
Work may include educating and training the community and healthcare workers to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases.
Work may include applying their knowledge of how and why communicable diseases spread and making recommendations on containment and treatment.
Work may include coordinating and facilitating prompt and accurate flow of information between Infectious Disease staff, District Offices, State Health Centers, County/Municipal Health Departments, Bureau of Laboratories and CDC.
Work may include writing reports for funding entities and manuscripts for publication and preparing articles and summaries for statewide reports, Client publications and peer-reviewed journals.
Work may include delivering and presenting information on communicable diseases and preventive measures using information that maintains data integrity but is in a language accessible to the layperson, in order to provide clear and accurate information to the general public, health professionals or scientific audiences on public health issues.
Work may include assisting in the preparation of grant applications, progress reports, scientific articles, and presentations and other deliverables.
Work may include regular meetings with stakeholders to review team projects and team goals.
Work may include leading teams and working within teams to achieve common goals.
