  • QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must meet all applicable federal, state, or other pertinent regulatory requirements for laboratory director. Must hold a valid New York State Certificate of Qualification in the designated specialty area(s).
  • Must have demonstrated ability to direct all administrative and technical aspects of the laboratory specialty as documented by previous administrative or supervisory experience.
  • Must be a leader with excellent communication, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • High emotional quotient and knows how to manage and lead a team and engage with stakeholders professionally.
Basic FunctionProfessionally responsible for the clinical testing and operational activities of the laboratory including technical development, quality management, interpretative consultation, administrative management, educational activities for medical and graduate students and staff development. The Director must establish effective working relationships within the Department of Surgery, the Division of Transplant Surgery and with the medical staff, administration, and other key stakeholders outside of the Department of Surgery (DOS).
Ill. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans, directs, and supervises all professional, operational, and administrative aspects of the laboratory and is responsible for the evaluation and control of all assigned activities on an on-going basis.
  • Ensure that sufficient qualified personnel are employed with documented training and experience to supervise and perform the work of the laboratory.
  • Ensure that there is sufficient space, equipment, and supplies within the laboratory to perform the required volume of work with optimal accuracy, precision, efficiency, timeliness, and safety.
  • Responsible for regulatory compliance with federal, state, and institutional requirements.
  • Work with central finance to prepare financial reports, budgets and capital expenditures and maintenance.
  • Recommends to the Chair of the DOS and Chief of Transplant Surgery, actions necessary in regard to personnel, plant and equipment needed for the provision of laboratory services. Initiates, develops and, after appropriate approvals, implements new programs and services to maintain a laboratory at the level appropriate to a tertiary care institution.
  • Provide advice to referring physicians regarding the significance of laboratory findings and the interpretation of laboratory data.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with applicable accrediting and regulatory agencies, administrative officials, and the medical community. Maintains liaison with other areas/departments of the Medical Center to coordinate institutional efforts to improve patient care and reduce costs.
  • Ensure that the overall quality of work performed, and data generated in the laboratory is medically reliable data.
  • Maintain educational programs within the laboratory including departmental conferences for residents, laboratory staff, medical students, and medical technology students.
  • Develop and maintain research and laboratory policies and procedures so as to provide necessary new services that will ensure the laboratory's leadership in the medical laboratory community.
  • Ensure that the laboratory meets all applicable federal, state and accreditation regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that the laboratory is monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of services rendered by outcome-oriented objective measurements through active participation in the Renal Transplant Service Quality Improvement program.
  • Set goals and allocate resources within the laboratory. Provides effective and efficient administrative direction of the laboratory. Participates in the institution's budget planning process.
  • Provide counsel to and evaluate the laboratory's supervisory personnel.
  • Provide a safe laboratory environment for all personnel.
  • For testing not performed on site, responsible for selecting an appropriate reference laboratory.
  • Engage in active citizenship in the DOS and Albany Medical College
  • Guarantee active monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement of quality within Laboratory Service
  • Have a vision to innovate and partner with the growth of the Transplant program at Albany Medical Center.
  • Maintains and demonstrates competency in all assigned duties of Laboratory Director.
