Position SummaryUnder the direct clinical supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Medical (Pharmacy) Technician is responsible for organizing the medication storage and distribution areas and assists in the procurement of ordered medications from an off-site pharmacy as well as assisting in the return of unused medications. The Medical Technician will assist other medical staff with daily operations of the clinic, infirmary, and lab.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assist with the maintenance of pharmacy records.
  • Assist with the maintenance of inventory and audit procedures and records.
  • Maintain the security of all medications and supplies under their control or supervision.
  • Processes supply requests in a prompt, cooperative and efficient manner.
  • Confirm ordered medications are received.
  • Log outgoing medications.
  • Fax patient prescriptions to the offsite pharmacy in a timely manner per Unit policy/process.
  • Communicate with offsite Pharmacy staff as needed to ensure faxed prescriptions/orders are received by them and legible and as necessary to ensure timely delivery of all ordered medications.
  • Perform medication expiration checks of all medications in the Unit as per policy/procedure.
  • Report delays, discrepancies or any and all concerns immediately to the appropriate
supervisor.
  • Maintain an orderly, clean and organized medication area at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient records.
  • Comply with applicable Administrative/Institutional Directives related to medication
distribution and storage within the qualifications of a pharmacy technician.
  • Attends unit meetings as directed.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance studies and meetings as requested or directed.
  • Approaches changes in a positive manner.
  • Makes suggestions for improving work conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Gathers and collates pharmacy data for submission at CQI meetings. Completes outcome studies for CQI meetings to monitor contract compliance.
Job RequirementsThe following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
LICENSURE: Current, valid New Mexico Pharmacy Tech license
CERTIFICATION: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT); current CPR Certification
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience as a Pharmacy Technician preferred; correctional experience preferred
