Summary:
The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care and ensuring operational efficiency within our primary care practice. This multifaceted position is responsible for providing administrative and clinical support services that uphold our health center's mission of delivering competent, caring, and highly satisfactory healthcare services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care and Clinical Support:
- Prepare examination rooms by ensuring all necessary equipment and patient information are readily available for efficient and effective visits.
- Greet patients warmly, establish rapport, and help them feel comfortable and prepared for their appointments.
- Accurately and efficiently perform vital sign measurements, height and weight assessments, electrocardiograms (EKGs), vision and hearing examinations as assigned.
- Meticulously document all patient encounters, ensuring accurate and complete medical records.
- Collaborate closely with Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs) to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Maintain organized medical records using standardized filing systems.
- Monitor and manage inventory levels, placing orders for supplies as needed.
- Administer rapid HIV tests, ensure proper consent procedures, and complete all necessary documentation.
- Assist with therapeutic procedures and prepare/administer medications as ordered by providers.
- Collect, preserve, and handle bodily fluids, blood, and other specimens with utmost care and precision.
- Perform simple STAT screening tests on collected specimens.
Administrative and Coordination Support:
- Prepare necessary forms and documentation for patient visits.
- Process referral requests by obtaining insurance authorizations, completing referral forms, scheduling appointments, coordinating transportation services, and notifying patients upon completion.
- Process medication refill requests as assigned.
Laboratory Services:
- Perform a variety of standard laboratory tests with standing orders from primary care providers (e.g., blood glucose, urinalysis).
- Ensure proper labeling and preparation of laboratory specimens, adhering to protocols and procedures.
- Complete all documentation and forms related to specimen handling, and record all actions in the patient's medical record.
- Receive, track, and forward laboratory results to primary care providers, recording results in the patient's record as directed.
Equipment and Supply Management:
- Regularly inventory laboratory supplies, place orders, and properly store received items.
- Ensure proper maintenance, handling, storage, and cleansing/sterilization of laboratory equipment, adhering to manufacturer guidelines and OSHA regulations.
- Coordinate servicing of equipment at recommended intervals.
Triage Support:
- Assist primary care providers and clinical nurses in gathering information for patient triage.
General Responsibilities:
- Consistently practice universal precautions and adhere to infection control protocols.
- Participate in relevant practice committees and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
- Perform additional duties related to the Medical Assistant role as directed by supervisors.
- Substitute for Medical Assistants at other practices when necessary.
- Support practice operations by completing data entry tasks as assigned.
- Receive cross-training as a Medical Receptionist and substitute in this role when necessary, including scheduling, registration, updating patient records, answering phones, and other front-desk duties.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Current Medical Assistant Certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- Proficient in computer applications, including word processing software.
- Familiarity with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Exemplary organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
