Heartland Head Start is Hiring a Teacher III - Support Staff (Part-Year) Near Bloomington, IL

Summary:

The Teacher III creates and manages an attractive, warm, and challenging learning environment for all children. This position is responsible for development of appropriate classroom activities that will support and nurture children. This position is also responsible for encouraging and promoting parent involvement. The Teacher III is responsible for meeting all applicable Head Start Performance Standards and DCFS Licensing regulations. This is a 52-Week position that is considered full-time.

Essential Functions:

  • Classroom assignments may vary per the ongoing needs during the program year. Some assignments may include varying hours and varying locations.
  • Assist in establishing an environment which will stimulate a desire for learning, independence and positive self-esteem for children and families, both indoor and outdoor.
  • Assist in developing and implementing weekly plans, appropriate activities, and learning opportunities within the classroom atmosphere. Follow all Head Start Performance Standards, DCFS Licensing regulations and Heartland Head Start program goals.
  • Assist the T1 in assessing each child’s developmental needs and developing individual goals according to their interests, abilities, traits, and development. Collaborate with classroom staff to document individualized activities for all children.
  • Assist in preparing classroom handouts, newsletters, and reports to communicate effectively with children, parents, families, and staff. Submit all reports in the appropriate timeframe and meet all program deadlines. Assist in maintaining current files and up-to-date records of children and programs.
  • Participate in family-style meal service, providing supervision and model appropriate meal behavior. Clean the eating areas before & after meal service using the appropriate sanitation methods.
  • Ensure that the FRA is notified of family changes. Along with the classroom team, follow Heartland Head Start attendance procedures.
  • Be a positive role model to children, parents, and volunteers.
  • Promote best practices, as appropriate per classroom, in early childhood development based on Head Start Performance Standards, Creative Curriculum, HSELOF, CLASS, ITERS, and other prescribed curricula used at Heartland Head Start.
  • Actively participate in parent engagement activities including Parent/Child Connection meetings, classroom activities, and other HHS events. Encourage parent and community participation.
  • Nurture the development of self-esteem and social skills in children. Promote appropriate behavior practices.
  • Assist in providing appropriate screenings of children as required by Head Start Performance Standards, DCFS Licensing regulations, and Heartland Head Start curriculum.
  • Implement Active Supervision of Children procedures to ensure each child is safe and accounted for at all times.
  • Work with families to turn in in-kind monthly.

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Minimum High school diploma or G.E.D
  • Child Development Associate credential not required; but preferred
  • Must complete Illinois Food Handler’s card within 30 days of hire and maintain every 3 years.
  • Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 3 months of hire and maintain current certifications.
  • Must pass a DCFS background check.
  • Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license, automobile insurance, and reliable vehicle transportation.
  • Must meet all mandated requirements by the Office of Head Start and DCFS.

Other Functions:

  • Foster positive relationships between Heartland Head Start and Early Head Start children, their families, staff, and outside agencies, civic groups, and the general public.
  • Assist with all parts of developing child outcomes as assigned.
  • Participate in ongoing training regularly.
  • Assist with classroom coverage, food service, and bus monitoring for field trips and other classrooms’ needs as requested.
  • Assure general maintenance and security of facility and assist with inventory of equipment and supplies.

Environment:

This position requires the employee to handle a fast-paced, changing environment. Employee is regularly required to respond quickly, lift children, walk, stand, have the use of arms and hands, sit on the floor, reach, climb stairs, crouch, crawl, stoop, bend, and squat. Employee must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds regularly and carry thirty (30) pounds occasionally.

  • Cooperate with all supervisors, colleagues, and staff.
  • Communicate precisely, objectively, positively, and appropriately.
  • Participate in community and program events to promote and provide information about the program and recruitment options.
  • Be conscientious in looking for non-federal match (NFM) opportunities. Extend requests for NFM in-kind donations, including goods, services and/or cash, to enhance our organization’s fiscal opportunities.
  • Preserve confidentiality of all program, staff, and client information.
  • Complete all tasks in a timely manner.
  • Avoid derogatory comments about all program, staff, and client families.
  • Resolve program concerns and conflicts within program guidelines.
  • Routinely participate in approved program-related training.
  • Perform any other duties necessary to the smooth operation of the agency and its programs.
