As our Environmental Specialist, you will play a crucial role conducting compliance and monitoring efforts at the Hecla Greens Creek Mine. Additional duties will include ensuring environmental compliance, managing reporting to agencies, helping implement environmental management systems, providing training, and coordinating with the surface, mill and underground mine departments. Your contributions will help ensure the ongoing success of Greens Creek’s ability to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island, 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine employing approximately 500 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s what you can expect in this role:

• You will help to promote a strong environmental culture, promoting and teaching environmentally friendly values and work practices.
• Help manage air and water programs.
• Manage our environmental data management system.
• Conduct and oversee field work to collect monitoring data and maintain instrumentation including piezometers, inclinometers, weather station, etc.
• Prepare appropriate internal and external reports and timely submit utilizing proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, as well as various internal computerized systems.
• Interpret and analyze water, wastewater, and stormwater data across the site.
• Work closely with Environmental Technicians to ensure sampling is completed, scheduled, and recorded.
• Establish strong working relationships with operations and maintenance staff across the site to facilitate efficient and timely projects.
• You will help to foster a strong safety culture, promoting and exemplifying safe work practices throughout the organization.
