HELOTES HUMANE SOCIETY is Hiring an Executive Director Near San Antonio, TX

The Helotes Humane Society (HHS) is seeking a compassionate, animal-loving person to fill the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors and reports to the President and Vice President.

Position Description

The Helotes Humane Society’s Executive Director is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the organization. Serving as the key spokesperson and visible leader of the Humane Society, the Executive Director will speak about the organization’s work and service to the community with passion and eloquence. The Executive Director will be responsible for the planning, development, and successful implementation of all Society programs to meet the HHS mission and vision.

Summary of Expectations

The Executive Director must possess excellent administrative, management, and supervisory skills. The Executive Director must have the ability to develop a cohesive and positive team that is customer-service and animal oriented. The Executive Director is well-organized, innovative, and professionally motivated to develop goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the organization. The Executive Director will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills that can build bridges within the community.

Roles and Responsibilities

Relationship Building

  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with donors, volunteers, board of directors, partners, and other stakeholders to build support for the organization.
  • Represent the organization in the community and advocate for the organization’s mission.
  • Develop contacts with professional organizations, media, and sister rescues.
  • Participate in community outreach, educational, and adoption events.

Program Development and Management

  • Oversee the creation, implementation, and evaluation of programs to meet the organization’s mission.
  • Direct the administration of all organizational programs.
  • Ensure maintenance of accurate records and provide regular and ad hoc reports.

Site Management

  • Oversee the physical maintenance of the grounds and facilities including any capital construction projects.
  • Conduct weekly walkthrough inspections of all HHS facilities and grounds.

Fundraising

  • Set the tone and the strategy for fundraising performance.
  • Identify potential sources of investment and organize fundraising efforts.
  • Identify, prepare, and submit grant applications.

Financial Management

  • Manage finances including budget, fundraising strategies, and compliance with financial regulations.
  • Develop the organizational culture and promote transparency and accountability.
  • Coordinate with Board treasurer, bookkeeper, and other financial personnel.

Personnel Management

  • Identify, recruit, train, and develop a talented team of employees and volunteers who can lead critical departments and manage strategic business functions.
  • Foster a positive organizational and customer-oriented culture.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws.

Legal and Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor company operations and ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Ensure applicable reporting requirements are met on time.

Strategic Planning

  • Identify potential risks and opportunities within the organization and its environment to protect business interests.
  • Collaborate with the board of directors to identify, create, and implement strategic plans to actualize business objectives.
  • Develop and executive long-term strategies to advance the organization’s mission and vision.

Board Engagement

  • Provide regular updates and seek input on key decisions.
  • Maintain communication and collaboration between the operations and the board of directors.

Knowledges and Skills

  • Excellent understanding of finance-related performance standards.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute financial strategies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of corporate and regulatory best practices.
  • Organization and leadership skills.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills.
  • Personnel management skills including familiarity with applicable labor laws.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Five (5) years of non-profit experience.
  • Three (3) years of personnel management experience.
  • Three (3) years of Microsoft Office including Microsoft Teams experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to work with animals that may be diseased, injured, or have behavioral issues.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with loud noises, potential exposure to contagious disease, and the use of harsh chemicals (e.g., chlorine).
  • May be exposed to inclement weather conditions.
  • Saturdays and occasional evening work will be required.
  • Long periods of standing may be required.
  • Occasional lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 pounds will be required.

License and Certifications

  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
