NURSE / PARAPROFESSIONAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Nurse / Paraprofessional
Classification: Hourly; Non-Exempt
Reports to: Classroom Teacher / Education Program Director
Position PurposeThe Nurse/Paraprofessional is responsible for assisting the classroom Teacher with students with special needs in areas of academics, social skills, independence skills, and other activities of daily living while also providing basic medical care and support to other students with urgent medical needs throughout the day.
Requirements, Licenses And Certification
  • Minimum – Must have 60 units of higher education or have passed the CBEST.
  • Current California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) License or Registered Nurse (RN) License.
  • Valid CPR / First Aid Certification.
  • Training to administer Diastat anti-seizure medication (we will provide training if not already trained) .
  • Must possess a valid CA Driver License
Physical RequirementsAbility to Safely:
  • Sit, walk and stand for prolonged periods
  • Squat, stoop and kneel while working with children
  • “Chase” after fleeing students for safety purposes
  • Perform Repetitive motions
  • May require team-lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs. for a distance of up to 5 feet
  • Implement Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention techniques, as instructed (we will provide training if not already trained)

Essential Job Functions, Duties & ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Classroom Teacher and/or Education Program Director, the Nurse / Paraprofessional shall assist in fulfilling the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) as set up by the IEP Team as well as the student’s Individualized School Health Plan (ISHP) as directed by district Health Care Professionals.
The Nurse / Paraprofessional shall help prepare the classroom, monitor and provide documentation of the student’s daily performance, assist with student’s personal hygiene, and assist Classroom Teacher with various school events while also providing basic health care to specific students.
In compliance with HBIC policies and procedures, the Nurse / Paraprofessional shall (this is NOT intended to be a full-and-complete list of duties):
  • Assist students with special needs in all academic / classroom-related tasks and activities throughout their day.
  • Assist students with special needs in all self-help activities and activities of daily living (ADL).
  • Assist students with mobility issues in navigating their indoor and outdoor educational environment.
  • Assist with toileting and toilet training (as needed); this can include changing soiled diapers/clothing.
  • Assist with eating and nutritional needs throughout the day; this includes assisted feeding (as needed).
  • Maintain proper function and treatment of equipment and supplies as directed.
  • Maintaining and record data on informational charts for student academic progress, behaviors, and/or medical supports.
  • Assist with Behavioral Interventions as needed (once trained in Crisis Prevention Institute’s Non-Violent Crisis Intervention – training provided by HBIC).
  • Assist with the creation and/or distribution of parent-teacher communications, as directed.
  • Communicating with the school office and or student guardians.
  • Understands, is aware of, and provides proper care for the medical needs of students.
  • Responsible for functioning under the scope of practice of their personal credentials (LVN or RN).
  • Administers prescribed medication following approved protocols, records medication and treatment given.
  • Complies with HBIC policies/procedures including those applicable to any emergency involving a student.
  • Performs basic first aid/CPR and assists with student health monitoring (HBIC will not hold employee liable as referenced in Government Code 820.2 & 825)
