Heriot-Watt University is Hiring a Fire Safety Manager Near Edinburgh, IN

Grade and Salary: Grade 7, £36,023 - £45,585

FTE and Working Pattern: 35 Hours weekly, open ended, hybrid role

Detailed Description

Based at our Edinburgh Campus, SafeGuarding Services seeks to appoint a suitably qualified, experienced, and dynamic individual to join the team in the role of Fire Safety Manager.

You should have relevant experience in fire prevention, fire engineering, be highly motivated and organised with proven ability to deliver competent advice in terms of The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and deliver expert fire risk assessment services across the broad spectrum of the University’s activities.

You will also be required to support and implement the University Fire Strategy, develop and deliver a proactive programme of fire safety training, fire safety inspections and audits.

The post holder will also be required to investigate fire related incidents, liaise with relevant enforcing authorities and provide direct support to the University community.

You should have membership of an appropriate professional body supported by relevant experience, be a self motivator with sound communication skills and able to work under pressure in order to meet strict deadlines.

It is also essential that you have proven experience working in a fire safety department within a fire and rescue service environment. A recognised health and safety qualification would also be distinctly advantageous.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Provision of professional competent advice to the Schools/Services and others on compliance with all relevant legislation and associated issues.
  • Support the development and implementation of appropriate fire strategies, policies, and processes in line with the University's evolving needs.
  • Ensuring all relevant buildings within the University are subjected to a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment to comply with the relevant parts of the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.
  • Assist in communicating and liaising with building Duty Holder/Responsible Person, Estates and other relevant stake-holders to ensure that fire risk assessment action plans are progressed appropriately.
  • Liaising with relevant stake holders to ensure projects and refurbishment works comply with all relevant legislation and associated guidance.
  • Assist in investigating and managing fire related incidents and other associated fire safety matters. Lead fire investigation procedures.
  • Assist in communicating, supporting and providing appropriate advice to senior management groups and stakeholders on all fire safety issues.
  • Support the development and delivery of a comprehensive programme of fire-related training courses as required to meet the current and future needs of the organisation.

Education, qualifications and experience:

  • Significant experience within a Fire Safety Department, preferably with relevant service with at managerial level in a fire and rescue service.
  • Expert working knowledge of fire safety legislation and accepted best practice, with experience of its application in a wide range of settings.
  • Proven experience in the assessment of fire safety risks in a wide range of building categories.
  • Ideally a significant fire safety qualification and at least Graduate grade membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering fire safety training.
  • Competence in use of using standard computer applications.
  • As it may be necessary for the post holder to interact with routine health and safety issues – a recognised Health & Safety Qualification would be distinctly advantageous.
  • Access and use of a vehicle and a full, clean driving licence is essential.
  • As we are a global University The post holder will be required to travel between our 3 campuses in Scotland and occasional travel to our campuses in Dubai and Malaysia.
  • The post holder will be required to be a member of the University Emergency Response Team (ERT).
