HERITAGE INTERMEDIATE SCH is Hiring a Media Assistant, 7.5 hrs/day Near Middlebury, IN

JOB GOALS:Manage the school library containing general, audio-visual, and specialized materials for use by students, faculty, and administrative staff. Provide each student with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety and range of materials that will invite intellectual probing, growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Administrative Duties

  1. Operate and supervise the elementary library.
  2. Recommend and administer the library budget.
  3. Supervise automated library system.
  4. Provide assistance with automated learning systems.
  5. Train other workers engaged in cataloging, locating, filing, or copying selected material.
  6. Organize and implement reading programs.
  7. Plan school-wide activities during National Children’s Book Week (November) and National Library Week (April).
  8. Furnish information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.

Reference Duties

  1. Assist students with research problems while providing educational experiences in the area of media resources.
  2. Help students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.

Instruction Duties

  1. Instruct teachers and students on the use of the computerized card catalog.
  2. Present lessons to fourth grade classes in cooperation with teachers: library arrangement; numerical and alphabetical systems; three main cataloging categories; and the automated catalog.
  3. Promote appropriate conduct of students using library facilities.

Consultation Duties

  1. Serve as a resource person for committees or councils.
  2. Serve as a resource person to teachers for classroom planning.

Selection and Acquisition Duties

  1. Select, order, catalog, maintain inventories, and classify the general and collection and special collections of technical books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, audio-visual material, microforms, journal reprints, and other materials.
  2. Assist staff in the selection of books and other instructional materials and inform the staff members concerning new materials the library acquires.
  3. Assist faculty by making library materials available to supplement the instructional program.

Cataloging Duties

  1. Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials.
  2. Keeps materials current.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Aides hired after January 8, 2006, must have: 

- Completed two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education; or 

- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or 

- Passed the Para Pro 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of school employees, students or parents.

MATHEMATICAL SKILL:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must be proficient in the use of computers for various office applications. Ability to type accurately at a minimum speed of 50 words per minute. Employee should also be able to use the machines, tools, equipment, and work aids that may be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work, i.e., adding machine, duplicating machine, copy machine, calculator, sorting machines, tools, charts, forms, ledgers, schedules, textbooks. Employee must maintain a positive relationship with other staff, parents, and students.

required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The working environment is mainly indoors other than routine errands.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

190 days per year. Salary and benefits as per Classified Policy.

EVALUATION:

An evaluation will be done on the employee's performance on an annual basis.
