Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
The DON must have knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to the practice of nursing in a long-term care setting. He/she will have strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities. The DON has the ability to make presentations before top management, public groups, and staff as well as the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The DON must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret journals, financial reports, and legal documents as well as the ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Working Conditions and Special Requirements
The DON must be able to work overtime and must be available on an “on-call” basis for consultation and is able to be summoned to the facility if needed in an emergency and is expected to report to the facility in an emergency situation.
The DON will work in a climate-controlled and well-lit environment with a smoke-free policy. He/she will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk exposure to infectious diseases but receives training in handwashing practices and Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated. The DON is subject to interruptions, noise, and odors daily.
