Controller | Full-Time, Hybrid

MSP Real Estate | West Allis, WI

The Controller serves as backup to the CFO and leads and directs the accounting and finance employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Financial preparation for corporate entities
  • Transfer operating cash as needed
  • Payroll review and posting of entries
  • Prepare real estate entities financials
  • Prepare surplus cash calculations
  • Review construction draws
  • Constructing accounting work
  • Maintain bank accounts; provide appropriate access to accounts
  • Maintain Yardi access and permissions
  • Assist Budgeting with below the line items and assigned entities
  • Maintain and assure payments for real estate taxes
  • Maintain and assure payments of HOME loans
  • Provide year-end information to auditors/tax accounts
  • Review and approve preliminary audits
  • Oversee 1099 preparation and filing
  • Assist leadership with information when requested
  • Direct supervision of accounting and finance employees; fulfill supervisor responsibilities in accordance with company's policies and applicable laws
  • Maintain responsibility in areas of:
    • Interview, hire and train employees
    • Plan, assign and direct work
    • Appraise performance
    • Reward and discipline employees
    • Address complaints and resolve problems
  • Assist with additional projects and duties as assigned
  • Support and serve as backup to the CFO
  • All other duties as assigned by CFO

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting pr Finance required
  • Certified Public Accountant, CPA, preferred
  • 2 years of public accounting experience preferred
  • 2 years of supervisory and/pr management experience required
  • Strong computer aptitude, including expertise with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook as well as applicable accounting software; experience with Yardi accounting software preferred
  • Experience in development and construction of new business locations, project accounting, construction draws, etc. preferred
  • Analytical Skills: synthesize complex or diverse information
  • Problem Solving: identify and resolve problems in a timely manner as well as skillfully gather and analyze information
  • Communication: speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrate group presentation skills, and conduct productive meetings
  • Interpersonal Skills: ability to communicate orally and in writing and manage well at all levels of the company
  • Judgement: display willingness to make decisions; exhibit sound and accurate judgement; and make timely decisions
  • Planning and Organization: prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; and develop realistic action plans
  • Leadership: inspire and motivate others to performa well and accept feedback from others
  • Management Skills: involve employees in planning, decision-making, facilitation, and process improvement; be available to employees; provide regular performance feedback; and develop subordinates' skills and encourage growth
  • Delegation: delegate work assignments, give authority to work independently, set expectations, and monitor delegated activities

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Frequently required to talk or listen. The ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and other employees is crucial. Regular use of email, telephone, and videoconferencing is essential. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or review documents. 
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time, sitting for extended periods and extensive work at a computer is common, occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc., constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must occasionally move boxes, office equipment or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. 
  • The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • Must be able to work 8 to 10 hours per day between the hours of 7:00am to 6:00pm at least 5 days per week and occasionally be able to work up to 60 hours per week and 6 days per week if needed. Required to occasionally work evenings, nights, and/or weekends, and/or be on-call as needed. Must be able to travel overnight up to 10% of the time
