Basic Function

Reporting to the Product Development Manager for Tulsa Lubricants & Specialty Products, the Research Chemist provides laboratory testing and technical support to the lubricants and specialty product technology team.

Job Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: (functions considered essential as defined by ADA)

  • Conduct laboratory testing to support Technology, Operations, and the LSP business needs.
  • Produce bench scale blends and conduct laboratory testing in support of research, product development, customer/Sales technical support, and product support.
  • Conduct timely analyses and communicate experiment results, both informally as well as via formal reports
  • Perform routine-to-complex instrument/method calibrations. Conduct instrument problem solving and support ongoing operation of test equipment, including vendor management for on-site service calls.
  • Monitor process control of refinery production streams for lubricant and specialty products, including paraffinic oils, aromatic oils, and paraffinic waxes.
  • Provide technical support to the LSP business in addressing product quality issues.
  • Display good laboratory bench techniques and takes initiative in carrying out tasks.
  • Maintain and organize the laboratory. Ensure work area is well-supplied and exemplifies good housekeeping practices.
  • Support programs in new areas of expertise working with Product Specialists and Technologists
  • Provide technical and strategic advice to functional and senior management in area of specialization.
  • Provide product problem resolution support as required and interface with other organizational groups.
  • Exemplify good design of experiments, and contributes to designs of experiments issued by Product Specialists
  • Demonstrate ability to balance competing priorities, handling of multiple tasks, and willingness to support others in a collaborative team environment.
  • Adhere to all safety, quality (ISO 9001) and environmental (ISO 14001) standards, procedures, and initiatives. Document and maintain records.

Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from timeto time in their sole and complete discretion.

Experience
  • Demonstrated university chemistry laboratory experience. Minimum of 2 years industry laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience in implementation and testing requirements of ASTM International or other standardized test methods
  • Previous experience within the lubricants or petroleum industry and/or experience in R&D is preferred.
Education Level
  • Bachelor's degree in science (B.Sc.) with demonstrated experience working in a laboratory.
  • Graduate degree in Chemistry (M.Sc., Ph.D.) is preferred.

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility

May lead the work of others regularly.

Work Conditions
  • Chemical laboratory environment. Refinery based, industrial environment, including, but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, and tanks. Occasional travel by air and land to group meetings and/or industry meetings.
Physical Requirements

Job conditions require standing, making visual inspections, making precise hand and finger movements, reaching or grasping, and wearing personal protective equipment (beards not permitted). Job conditions may require walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, talking or hearing, lifting and/or carrying up to 10lbs, pushing and/or pulling up to 10lbs, strenuous physical activity, and perceiving color differences.
