Job Summary:

The Geophysical Electronics Engineer is a senior-level based position that reports to HGI Senior Management, and works with other scientists, engineers, geophysicists, and technicians, both inside and outside of HGI. This position manages HGI R&D, and leads scientists and engineers in new geophysical product development to meet customers needs, and performs scientific research to support existing HGI technology and new geophysical product development. This position requires the ability to concisely communicate complex engineering and scientific principles about geophysical concepts and equipment to HGI Management, and customers. This position will also provide technical support and maintenance to existing HGI products and future efforts based on market needs.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Lead innovation, design, development, prototyping, testing, maintenance and supervision of geophysical technology, instrumentation and data acquisition systems to support engineering and geophysical projects.
  • Oversee HGIs research and development team
  • Support risk reduced development of new product concepts, and technology, where practical, with physics and/or electronics based numerical models.
  • Remain up to date with the current state of the art methods in geophysics. Maintain knowledge of geophysical industry instrumentation and hardware systems, including new up and coming methods and how they can be applied to future HGI products and projects.
  • Support existing HGI technology, where necessary, with physics based numerical models representing geophysical situations.
  • Design/build/construct geophysical equipment and components based on areas of growth and client needs
  • Provide technical support/oversite for existing HGI projects. Participate on geophysical projects, where applicable, and complete assigned project work. This may include data processing, plotting, interpretation, reporting and analysis.
  • Help HGI staff with project survey design to support proposals and project execution. This may include participating in some amount of field work in order to see real-world application of instrumentation and sensor systems. This will require some amount of travel.
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of current HGI geophysical instrumentation and hardware systems.
  • Responsible for design and preparation of acceptance test procedures that evaluate instrumentation to the limits possible such that failures can be detected and remedied before field or production use.
  • Support quality assurance and engineering procedural practices
  • Diagnose/debug/repair/upgrade system failures and complete in-house repairs to HGI equipment.
  • Learn and become proficient with the existing HGI engineering and scientific software systems.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Required or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Geophysics. Masters or PhD preferred.
  • 5 years of applicable work experience.
  • Experience with mixed signal electronics engineering and modeling methodologies.
  • Experience with end to end electronics development and fabrication processes, from concept through fabrication, testing, and deployment, including PCB design.
  • Experience with power control systems, including generators, end use DC power supply design, batteries, and AC power delivery systems for instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of geophysical sensors and related sensor physics.
  • Knowledge of GPS.
  • Knowledge of unique grounding conditions related to geophysical systems.
  • Knowledge of electronics noise and electromagnetic interference mitigation and control methods.
  • Familiarity with electronics, electrical, and mechanical drawings.
  • Understanding of software to control and interface with data acquisition hardware.
  • Knowledge of geophysical instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of geophysical concepts and methods.
  • Ability to design test protocols to support QA including writing acceptances tests and reports.
  • Ability to effectively communicate about complex technology and scientific concepts.
  • Ability to synthesize new geophysical product concepts.
  • Knowledge of or have the ability to learn and use engineering software packages such as AutoCAD, PSPICE, Cadence OrCAD Capture CIS, and Cadence Allegro PCB Designer.
  • Knowledge of or have the ability to learn scientific modeling tools such as Matlab and Comsol Multiphysics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Will talk and hear to communicate. Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, pull: objects, materials, controls and tools repetitively. Will be required to lift, carry and move up to 50lbs over uneven terrain.
