SummaryThis position is located at Gallup Indian Medical Center (GIMC), Gallup, New Mexico. Gallup Indian Medical Center is a combination of a comprehensive inpatient facility, outpatient clinics, and 24 hour Emergency Room. The incumbent serves as a Medical Officer (Internal Medicine), which involves performance of diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic services to Internal Medicine patients in Hospital, Health Centers, Clinics or other designated health care facilities.

Duties
  • Interview and examine patients, review past medical history, and request and/or perform diagnostic tests and examinations.
  • Refer patients to appropriate contract medical or other government facilities, provide full clinical information for care and diagnostic procedures that's not provided by local IHS facilities.
  • Respond to acute emergency interventions, work closely in consultation with other members of medical departments.
  • Manage and direct the Internal Medicine Department in strategic planning, policy formulation, budget management, human resources management, performance improvement, quality management, accreditation readiness, information management, equipment and supplies management, and planning and management of specialty clinics.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
Basic Requirement(s)Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

Additional Requirements For Grades GS-12 And AboveGS-15: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training within the specialty area of the positon to be filled.(e.g., a senior specialist with several years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR - Board Certification: Applicants applying in a specialty must meet one of the following as an approved agency-wide selective factor. This becomes part of the minimum requirements to qualify for the position.
  • Board Certified in the Specialty of Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine OR
  • Active Registrant of the Board in the Specialty to which the applicant is applying

Additional InformationPer IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
