Organizational History and Background Description:

Established in 1992, Hispanic Services Council’s mission is to increase access and opportunities for Latinos and influence the systems that serve them. HSC is a private, non-profit organization whose work focuses on developing opportunities that result in an educated, healthy, prosperous, and engaged Latino community. To achieve our mission and purpose, our programs focus on increasing the academic performance of Latino children through parental involvement, improving healthy living and nutrition, and improving the quality of life through civic engagement of Latinos at all levels in our community.

Job Description:

Under the direction of the Program Manager and Director, the Promotor(a) de Salud will support the local community health initiatives under the Puentes de Salud (Bridges to Health) Program. This initiative seeks to improve the health outcomes of community residents by improving access and delivery of health services, and to increase their knowledge to address health disparities in the community.

The Promotor(a) will build the individual and community’s capacity to support healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices through a range of activities including: outreach, community education, social services, and information and referral. They will serve as a liaison between the health/social services programs and the local community to access those services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Play an active role in promoting the Puentes de Salud Program services to community members.

2. Deliver application assistance for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, the Hillsborough County Health Care Plan (HCHCP), and other social services where people live, work, play, or pray.

3. Provide community resources information and referrals as needed.

4. Screen individuals to see if they qualify for insurance or other assistance.

5. Follow-up with clients to ensure that their needs are resolved.

6. Prepare and teach nutrition classes that promote wellness and healthy behaviors.

7. Assist in designing and implementing community outreach to inform, educate, and involve residents in program activities, such as, charlas (informal small group meetings), neighborhood and community meetings, training workshops, health fairs, and other special events.

8. If appropriate, provide basic interpretation and/or translation for clients and health care/social service providers.

9. Have consistent and accurate documentation of program activities and work carried out for various reports.

10. Actively participate in staff team meetings, trainings, and conferences as required.

11. Perform all functions and activities within the guidelines set forth by Hispanic Service Council’s mission, vision, goals, and policies.

12. Promote and represent Hispanic Services Council in meetings with community partners and program activities in the community.

13. Other relevant duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills, and traits:

● Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and English (verbal and written) and conduct community presentations in both languages.

● Computer proficient and knowledge of how to use MS office programs including; OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Able to quickly learn how to use video-conferencing platforms such as Zoom and MS Teams.

● Knowledgeable about the history, people, institutions, and conditions of the local community.

● Comfortable working with diverse populations and in diverse settings (virtual, in-person, churches, homeless shelters, community organizations, home visits, inside and outside locations, etc).

● Ability to relate to people regardless of age, background, culture, education, experience, and/or language.

● Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

● Self-motivated with an ability to work in teams as well as work independently with minimal supervisory direction to accomplish established goals.

● Flexibility in work schedule and programmatic requirements (work may include evening programs, or weekend events)

● Ability to organize information, events, and program activities.

● Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and insurance required.

● Ability to travel to in-person locations throughout Hillsborough County, as requested.

● Pass a level 2 background check.

● Able to lift 25-pound (or more) boxes and transport them to various locations.

● Sitting, standing, and/or walking for an extended period of time at outdoor and indoor events.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
