CURRENT STATE EMPLOYEES:
Current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent service as a Fire & Safety Representative and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Successful completion of a qualifying pre-employment physical examination, background check, and drug testing may be required for permanent appointment. Details regarding these exam requirements can be found under the Fire Protection Specialist title at: https://www.cs.ny.gov/ehs/forms.cfm.
Successful completion of a two-year traineeship leads to appointment as a Fire Protection Specialist 1, SG-18.
GENERAL PUBLIC CANDIDATES:
IIndividuals who have 55b/c eligibility AND meet the below qualifications are encouraged to apply. If applying using your 55b/c status, please provide a copy of your current 55b/c eligibility letter.
Either 1: Three years of full-time, paid experience as a firefighter in a fire department, military fire department, or industrial fire brigade. Experience must have been obtained on or after January 1, 2005.
OR
2: Six years of experience as a volunteer firefighter or firefighter trainer. Experience must be obtained on or after January 1, 2005.
Non-Qualifying experience: Radio dispatch, administrative or bookkeeping duties.

Duties Description
Duties included but are not limited to:
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement fire investigation training curriculum and programs, to include revisions as well as course instruction.
  • Respond to and assist at incidents in response to requests as assigned under the Fire Investigation Technical Assistance Program.
  • Process scenes, conduct interviews, collect evidence, prepare reports, attend legal proceedings, and other requisite follow up. Physical activity including shoveling, lifting, and traversing uneven surfaces can be expected.
  • Assist client group and administer various Branch programs including but not limited to; burn injury reporting, arson laboratory improvement program, criminal history inquiries, certification, and various special presentations.
  • Obtain and maintain certification and perform the duties and responsibilities of a New York State Peace Officer.
  • Serve as liaison between state agencies, fire departments, and other municipal, county, and state officials during the preparation and implementation of emergency response plans including Fire Mutual Aid and Mobilization, Disaster Declarations, and Arson Control.
  • Assist supervisors and accept special assignments in areas pertinent to the unit's operations and protocols.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
NOTE:
  • Travel may be required (approximately 60%), including during evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required, or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
NOTE: Support of operations during times of emergency and disaster from State Emergency Operations Center (EOC), state field offices and/or local deployments may be required, which would result in a change and/or increase in working hours, locations and/or duties.
