Job Details Level Experienced Job Location Academy of Hope Adult PCS NE - Washington, DC Position Type Contractor Education Level 2 Year Degree Travel Percentage Negligible Job Shift Evening Job Category Consultant Medical Billing and Coding Adjunct Instructor Medical Billing and Coding Adjunct Instructor Reports to: Healthcare Manager Functional Area: Academic Job Location: Ward 5 Evening FLSA Status: Independent Contractor Job Classification Category: Adjunct Teacher - Contractor Hourly rate: $40.00 POSITION OVERVIEW: The Medical Billing and Coding Adjunct Instructor will train and educate students according to the curriculum provided, which is designed to assist students to gain knowledge and skills that will prepare them to pass the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist certification exam. The instructor will teach students on the proper application of coding and billing medical records within healthcare industry standards. The Medical Billing and Coding Adjunct Instructor will educate students in medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, ICD/CPT/HCPCS coding, insurance- (claims, payments, and carriers), HIPPA, compliance- (laws, fraud, ethics) and revenue cycle management. All instructors are responsible for creating a supportive, empowering learning environment for adult learners and delivering quality content area instruction. Schedule as an adjunct instructor:
Fall 2024 beginning August- June 2025
Classes will be held at Academy of Hope's Ward 5 site in the evening.
Classes will be held Monday- Thursday5-9 pm* (In person), with 30-minute dinner break.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures regulatory compliance with state and federal instructional guidelines and commitment to the philosophy and mission of Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School (AOH).
Helps develop Medical Billing and Coding curriculum.
Teaches (lecture/presentations/quizzes/homework) medical billing and coding students from the established curriculum.
Evaluates and documents students' progress through testing, observation, and assessment of skills (interpersonal, technical, clinical, and classroom)
Maintains confidential, accurate, and comprehensive records of students (attendance, grades, prerequisites, and skills assessments) AOH regulations
Ensures that students learn to treat residents, families and other members of the health care team with the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere that recognizes the individual's needs and rights.
Maintains efficient and effective use of all supplies and equipment
Engages in regular effective communication with students, staff, and other stakeholders
Maintains a clean/safe environment conducive to learning
Collaborates with Healthcare Programs Manager regarding AOH medical billing and training program
Oversees volunteer instructional staff serving as co-teachers in their classes and to those providing one-on-one or small group tutoring to their students;
Coordinates with Student Support Services in ensuring adult learners get both the academic and social services they need to be successful in school and in their transition to college or career. Participates in regular meetings with the Student Support Team for this purpose.
Other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator or Director of Career and Workforce
Remains current on state and federal regulations and training standards
Medical Billing and Coding Adjunct Instructor License/Certification:
Medical Billing and Coding Certification- CPC, CBCS, CMAA
Qualifications:
3 years experience in medical billing and coding, EMR, and insurance regulations
2 years teaching or training in healthcare field required.
Associate degree or successful completion of 60 college credit hours preferred
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs
Ability to teach and control the behavior of students
Knowledge of academic and/or vocational education criteria
Knowledge of and ability to apply current education methodologies and techniques
Must be able to stand for long periods of time
Hands on experience in medical transcription duties
Functional knowledge of insurance companies
Knowledge in the following content areas:
Medical terminology
Insurance/Medicare
ICD/CPT/HCPCS coding
Billing Process
Human anatomy
OTHER NECESSARY SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent time management and organizational skills
Must be a self-starter and able to multitask
Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office and Medical Billing software
Demonstrated ability and experience to engage the interest of adult learner
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse adult learners, including those with special needs
License/Certification:
