The Position

Horizons for Homeless Children is seeking an Assistant Vice President of Development to provide innovative and strategic leadership, a commitment to philanthropic engagement and growth, and a passion for its compelling mission. They will actively engage in the cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals and will manage the day-to-day operations, systems, and processes to achieve and exceed annual goals.

The Assistant Vice President of Development will be a seasoned fundraiser and manager, with expertise in major gifts and special events. They will be adept at creating and implementing data-driven strategies to advance relationships and philanthropy and will be an empathetic and empowering manager, engaging a team to the highest levels of performance and impact.


Responsibilities

The Assistant Vice President of Development will provide leadership in the following areas:


Strategy, Visioning and Planning

  • Partner with the Chief Advancement Officer to sustain and enhance a comprehensive fundraising program, with planning for both near-term and long-term philanthropic sustainability.
  • Manage a department-wide plan of work that will optimize new and current funding opportunities and will advance state-of-the-art fundraising practices, including and not limited to social media and technology-driven strategies for donor acquisition and pipeline building.
  • Create initiatives to expand Horizons’ prospect pipeline and revenue streams by accessing and optimizing new and existing networks and platforms.
  • Collaborate with program directors, staff, and volunteers across the organization to understand program impact and identify funding opportunities aligned with programmatic objectives.
  • In keeping with its mission, educate and develop talent and skills within the department that position Horizons for Homeless Children for philanthropic success and result in professional growth and retention.

Development

  • Lead and motivate the development team of six (Director of Annual Giving and Events, Director of Major Gifts, Director of Development Operations, and Director of Corporate, Foundation and Community Giving) and manage all members to meet individual fundraising and professional development goals, while fostering collaboration and achievement of shared objectives.
  • Develop multi-year strategies for sustained revenue and growth through Horizons’signature events, and individual, corporate and foundation relationships.
  • Actively manage a select portfolio of Horizons’ major donors and prospects.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communication to create impactful messaging for direct marketing and special events that is aligned with strategic initiatives and priorities.
  • Develop and maintain systems and processes to monitor high level detail relating to donor research, projections, direct mail, events, and outcomes.
  • Ensure timely delivery of impact and financial reports to partners and funders.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive development experience, including major gifts and special events, team leadership and management.
  • Demonstrated success building philanthropic relationships and revenue partnerships.
  • Experience leveraging individual, corporate and foundation relationships to access new sources of support.
  • A proven track record of effective team management, including the ability to inspire, mentor, and develop staff.
