SummaryThe Production Manager works as a close liaison to the Head of Production at Houston Ballet with a primary focus on managing and implementing the current company and academy season in one of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies. The PM is tasked with the dissemination of information, calendaring, scheduling, and assisting with the management of current show budgets and logistics.
Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesInclude the following. Other duties may be assigned;
  • Create and distribute department schedules, including technical schedules for Main Stage Shows, Tours, and Academy (school) shows. This includes engineering schedules for venues detailing HVAC needs for the stage, house and dressing rooms.
  • Work with the Head of Production to create and implement new policies and procedures within the production department to improve efficiency for the ongoing operations and mission fulfillment of HBF.
  • Provide support and assistance to visiting choreographers, designers, and resident artistic staff. Work directly with Artistic Staff to proactively support rehearsal and production needs.
  • Assist in the forecasting and tracking of payroll and other expenses.
  • Schedule and attend all production meetings, including tech rehearsal notes sessions.
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals, and performances, as assigned to serve as Manager on Duty.
  • Oversee the production department archiving of each production following the close of a production.
  • Work with the Head of Production and Technical Director to monitor and manage union collective bargaining agreements, including: IATSE Stagehands, AGMA Stage Managers, AGMA Dancers, and AFM musicians.
  • Assist Production Coordinator with production-related activities for Dance Lab events, whether internal or rental.
  • Contract and assist in the management of other non-union over-hire employees in the department.
  • Work with the Stage Management team in the creation and maintenance of hand props used in productions including the providing of props for studio rehearsals.
  • Coordinate production elements for other HBF events, as assigned.
  • Work with the marketing and development departments on tours, programs and unique VIP experiences to promote donor growth and involvement.
  • Work closely with Production Coordinator to support the Houston Ballet Academy’s rehearsal and performance needs.
  • Work with Stage Management to organize, hire and manage the individuals for the yearly internship opportunities
  • Implement and oversee industry best practices for first aid training and supplies within the department
  • Participate in the upkeep, organization and cleanliness of the server filing system
  • Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 2 years of production experience with increasing level of responsibility. Experience in a large-scale professional ballet, opera or performing arts environment preferred
  • Prior experience in budgeting and financial management
  • Prior experience managing theatre labor crew (specifically I.A.T.S.E.)
  • Experience with touring; international touring experience a plus
  • Experience working with designers and artistic collaborators
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail as evidenced by a proven track record of leading production activities in a top-tier professional environment
  • Great communicator who is an active listener and able to direct channels of communication effectively, so all parties can prioritize and understand workflow
  • Strong work ethic and stamina
  • Demonstrated ability to create and execute plans and anticipate and solve problems before they occur
  • Team leadership skills that include goal setting and evaluation of projects upon completion for constant improvement of production processes
Computer Skills
  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
Work Environment
  • Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation, and dark-lighted, indoor theatrical setting with adequate ventilation, and well-lighted, non-HVAC controlled warehouse and outdoor theatre setting
  • Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), and Loud noise (examples: saws, drills, vacuums, white noise, orchestral & recorded music)
  • Work hours:
    • non-performance periods: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • performance periods: to work outside the regular work hours, with significant nights and weekends
  • Moderate overnight travel (up to 15%) by land and/or air.
