HUDSON RIVER MUSEUM (HRM) is Hiring a Planetarium Technician, Part-Time Near Yonkers, NY

Period of Time: Through December 31, 2024 with potential to extend.

Pay Rate: $25.00 per hour.

Schedule: Part-time, 20 hours per week. This position is on-site.

Overview:

The successful candidate will join the Education Department as a crucial member of
the Planetarium staff, working under the Senior Manager, Planetarium and Science
Programs. The Planetarium Technician will be responsible for keeping the planetarium
up and running, ready to present a full schedule of programming—almost a thousand
shows a year, 6–7 days a week, in addition to live music, theater, and special events.

Central responsibilities include: maintaining the networked computers of the
planetarium’s simulation and projection backbone; programming new functions
into the planetarium software; downloading media and data from online repositories
and coding them into the planetarium system; physical upkeep of rack-mount units,
console controls, and projectors.

A Planetarium Technician with appropriate experience may be involved in the design,
construction, and maintenance of interactives and demonstration items used with
the public, and with school group visits.

The Planetarium Technician will occasionally be called upon to present a pre-recorded
planetarium program for the public or for school groups, on weekdays or weekends.

Qualified Planetarium Technician candidates will learn how to present live programs.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia Production, Computer Networking and
Architecture, Science Education or similar spheres
  • LAN administration experience, including set up, maintenance, and
troubleshooting
  • Experience with execution of online security best-practices
  • Programming experience in Windows environment
  • Familiarity with physical components of computer systems and ability
to work on them safely
  • Experience maintaining related mechanical devices; motors, wiring, switches,

control consoles, etc.

Interpersonal Qualifications:

  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with other staff, and communicate
technical information clearly
  • Commitment to being an articulate and respectful representative of the museum;
interacting with the general public of all ages, as the face of the institution
  • Strong interest in astronomy and astronomy education
  • English fluency
  • Experience in classroom or informal science education

Supplementary Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with 3D software such as Blender, Maya, Rhino 3D, Adobe
Substance suite
  • 2D or 3D animation, data visualization, or game design experience
  • Video post-production or editing experience
  • Conversational Spanish a plus
