EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN/DRIVER

CLASS SUMMARY

This is technical work in providing basic and intermediate life support emergency medical services care for a municipal emergency medical service department. Work involves responsibility for providing clinical care at the basic EMT level and intermediate EMT level on an ambulance, usually under the direction of paramedic. Work is performed under actual and administrative direction of the EMS Director and Medical Directors, and/or a Paramedic, and is reviewed through direct observation, reports and evaluation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the checking of vehicle, equipment, and supplies at the start of each shift.
  • Provide patient care.
  • Function as an emergency medical technician-basic or emergency medical technician-intermediate. 
  • Follow all department policies/procedures.
  • Follow all basic and intermediate life support protocols.
  • Complete documentation of paperwork such as patient care reports, supply requests, incident reports, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining vehicle, equipment, and quarters in a clean operating manner.
  • Act in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • When qualified to do so, drive emergency vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is frequently performed indoors at the city safety center or at other office locations, and frequently outdoors in the field at emergency response locations. Work requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing stairs, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 125 pounds, reaching with hands and arms in front of body and overhead, using hands and fingers to operate EMS vehicles, equipment, radios and computers. Work requires sufficient strength and agility to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations. Work occasionally exposes employee to body fluids, fumes, airborne particles, loud noise, toxic and caustic chemicals, extreme weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work requires possession of a High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of basic and intermediate life support EMS patient care.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, statutes and ordinances applicable to emergency medical services as pertaining to emergency medical technician care.
  • Skill in the operation and use of a computer and EMS software programs, and the preparation of automated records.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with superiors, crewmembers, and other allied health providers. 

LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • State of Ohio Driver’s License
  • State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician- Basic Certification Or State of Ohio Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate Certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) CPR Certification
