Senior Development Officer
Since 1897, The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) has been caring for the animals of Southwest Washington and surrounding areas. By working in collaboration with local veterinarians and animal rescue groups, the Humane Society and its partners in animal welfare look forward to a future where all companion animals will live in a loving home. Through the work of our committed staff and volunteers, HSSW offers a variety of programs including pet adoptions, community education, pet behavior advice, spay/neuter assistance, low-cost programs for qualifying families and much more. The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is dedicated to completing families through animal adoptions, matchmaking, and lost and found services. Our Mission is to: rescue •return •restore •rehome •reconnect. One animal at a time. We also own and operate ReTails Thrift Store - the premiere Clark County thrifting experience. Proceeds from ReTails support animal care and shelter operations.
HSSW is re-launching a multimillion-dollar campaign to fund a facilities expansion and renovation project, expand community program capacity and build its endowments that will allow the organization to better meet the changing needs of animals and families in our community. The campaign goal is $15 million. The Senior Development Officer will play a key role in the success of this campaign, balancing solicitation of gifts for this project with the acquisition of annual major and planned gifts. For context, the total fundraising goal for HSSW in 2024 is approximately $5 million, which includes all giving vehicles.
Ideal candidates for this position must have a high degree of social and emotional intelligence, excellent communication skills, keen attention to detail, and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including staff, volunteers, donors, board members, and the broader community. HSSW's Senior Development Officer (SDO) must be well-organized, demonstrate excellence in time management, possess a collaborative attitude, and maintain a professional demeanor. A passion for HSSW's mission and an understanding of our operational activities and goals are essential for success.
Position Summary
As a member of the Development and Marketing Communications Team, the SDO is responsible for securing financial resources for the Humane Society for Southwest Washington from individuals in our community. The SDO will compliment and complete the team of seasoned fundraisers, including HSSW's president, vice president of development and marketing, and the associate director of development. This position is highly collaborative and will participate in prospect management meetings and voice donor concerns so that they can be addressed in a timely manner. The SDO will bring the president and/or vice president into donor conversations as needed. This position reports to the Vice President for Development and Community Engagement.
Primary Responsibilities
Steward existing member of the St. Francis Circle (planned giving donors) alongside the Vice President and President to ensure donors' continued engagement with HSSW and solicit additional support for the campaign and annual fund.
Become well-versed in the goals and needs of the comprehensive campaign and communicate these to donors as needed.
Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 75-125 new donor prospects with capacity of $10,000 annually. Develop written, trackable plans for prospects including timelines and ask amounts.
Plan and implement stewardship activities including shelter tours, coffees, lunches, and small group gatherings along with other Development staff.
Attend and support all HSSW fundraising events.
Become proficient in giving policies at HSSW and follow all gift agreement policies regarding restrictions, naming opportunities, etc.
Evaluation Metrics
The SDO will have a goal to raise $500,000 - $1,000,000 annually (dependent on portfolio).
Conduct a minimum of 12 significant visits or contacts with donors per month, or about three to four per week, and share well-developed cultivation and solicitation plans with their supervisor.
Retain 80% of donors from previous year within assigned portfolio.
Secure at least 2 new planned gifts annually.
Prepare written proposals, gift agreements, and other materials needed to define, secure, and document major gifts in collaboration with the Development and Marketing team.
Effectively utilize Donor Perfect to maintain records of contacts with donors and prospects; track, evaluate and present relevant giving information; and utilize moves management functionality to document activity and success.
Qualifications and Experience
The SDO is an engaging, energetic, and sincere individual with a passion for animal welfare, and compassion for the animals and community of Southwest Washington. The SDO is results oriented and relationship driven and will be a key driver in the success of the campaign. The ideal candidate has a minimum of five years' experience in major and/or planned gift fundraising in a non-profit or higher education setting and a minimum of a bachelor's degree (advanced degree or CFRE preferred). Preference will be given to candidates with a documented track record of closing major gifts. Additional characteristics, qualities, and attributes include:
  • Passion for the mission of HSSW to rescue, return, restore, rehome, and reconnect one animal at a time for the Southwest Washington community.
  • Understand, support, and represent the guiding philosophy and principles of an open admissions shelter, as well as the pivotal role HSSW plays as the hub for animal welfare in the community.
  • Ability to establish, cultivate and steward strong professional relationships with stakeholders to build lifelong partnerships and trust while aligning their passions with the mission, priorities, and goals of HSSW.
  • Be innovative, self-motivated, and be able to manage multiple priorities, working both independently and as a team player.
  • Be a collaborative problem solver who brings an entrepreneurial approach to designing donor engagement strategies.
  • Possess exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.
  • Be committed to representing HSSW with enthusiasm, warmth, sincerity, and professionalism.
  • Excellent time management and strong organizational skills
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Donor Perfect, or a similar CRM system
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
Compensation and Benefits
The Senior Development Officer is a full-time FLSA exempt position with an annual salary of $80,000 - $90,000 depending on experience. Pay increases are contingent upon performance, experience, attitude, work ethic, core competencies, skill level, learning ability, commitment to collaboration, and organizational budget.

Paid Time Off (PTO) benefits - This position at the PTO7 level includes 3-weeks of PTO, plus 6 floating holidays, 3 days of bereavement leave, and 3 days of pet bereavement leave annually along with the ability to build up a long-term sick leave bank.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
The SDO must be able to speak to groups of people, repetitively use hands to operate computer, telephone, and electronic devices. They may be required to lift, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds while setting up events or moving supplies/materials. Most work is performed in a standard office cubicle environment, with exposure to environmental conditions that include working near animals. The primary workplace is at an animal shelter that operates seven days per week, with potential exposure to fractious animals; high noise levels; zoonotic diseases; animal bites and scratches; cleaning chemicals and allergens. Potential exposure of infectious diseases to owned animals. Some work will be performed at offsite locations for events and event preparation and coordination.
