Job Title: Physical Therapy Assistant
Supervisor Title: Eric McGlone, PTA
Department: Clinical Staff
Full-time or Part-time: Dependent on applicant needs
Exempt: Salary or Hourly depending on full-time or part-time
Position Purpose: To provide therapy services to patients under direct supervision of a physical therapist.
Essential Duties:
- Assist the licensed physical therapist in carrying out procedures and programs.
- Perform routine treatment procedures in accordance with the plan of care.
- Observe, record and report to his/her supervisor conditions, reactions, and responses related to assigned duties.
- Report any pertinent findings to the licensed physical therapist.
- Help to maintain appropriate records.
- Participate in educational activities offered by the company.
- Direct physical therapy aide(s) regarding physical therapy treatment as necessary and appropriate at the time of treatment under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.
- Maintain specific treatment area where he/she has given treatment.
- Communicate with patient’s physician as necessary regarding patient’s progress, treatment, etc., in consultation with the licensed physical therapist.
- Keeps current documentation as follows:
Daily notes
Progress notes as applicable
- Bring back patients from waiting room in a timely manner.
- Stay in treatment are unless directed to be elsewhere.
- All charts with notes completed daily.
- Documentation will be in accordance with Medicare guidelines.
- Participate in continuing education necessary to maintain license.
- Communicate and find coverage concerning schedule changes and coverage of patients. No patients are to be cancelled.
- Participate in team meetings as appropriate.
- Perform other reasonable duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Direct clinical time 92%
Indirect time 8%
Decision-Making: Must be able to make clinical decisions, in accordance with collected subjective and objective data. PTA shall not change plan of care unless authorized by Licensed Physical Therapist.
Communication: Directly with the Licensed Physical Therapist, patients, physicians, and co-workers.
Ability to use all the following equipment: Nautilus, bicycles, UBE, Stairmaster, treadmill, elliptical, electrical stimulation and ultrasound machines, cryotherapy tools, traction units, and repex machine, computers, sphygmomanometers, etc.
Knowledge Skills: Knowledge of the professional physical therapy assistant standards and practice to provide appropriate treatment of clients. Knowledge of equipment and instruments utilized in client care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Skills in developing and maintaining quality assurance measures. Skills in maintaining a professional interaction with all staff, medical professionals, and patients.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret test results, adapt and apply procedures. Ability to maintain effective working relationship with staff, medical community, patients, patient’s family members and the public.
Working Conditions: Clinical setting; busy. Needs to possess the ability to multitask and manage time appropriately.
Education: Complete approved two-year curriculum. Must be licensed within the
State of West Virginia. Possess appropriate experience as a student or practicing therapist.
Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting of patients and materials. Manual and finger dexterity needed. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 lb. Bending and stooping required. Requires knowledge and use of exercise equipment, computer, and other technical equipment. Corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Able to speak clearly. Required working under professional stressful conditions. Limited exposure to communicable diseases and or bodily fluids.
