Job DescriptionAbout HUSarchitecture:HUSarchitecture’s team of experts collaborates with the communities we serve to develop actionable solutions that improve the sustainability of the built environment. Our community-minded architecture firm in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago focuses on low-income housing projects, public schools, accessibility and sustainability consulting. Our work goes beyond a single building portfolio to address larger, systemic issues within programs that shape society. At the core of our mission, we create analytical tools to advocate for sustainable and equitable communities across the Chicago land area and are expanding nation-wide.
Key Role Responsibilities:Sustainability (50% of role):
  • Ability to organize, upload, and submit to Project Team the correct documents in the correct locations for ongoing sustainability and architectural projects
  • Conduct basic site visits unaided according to provided guidelines
  • Work as main contributor on design and construction LEED projects; review and compile LEED submittals
  • Support compiling Monthly reports for the organization
  • Conduct basic area take offs
  • Provide quality checks and/or reviews of team's internal work ranging from LEED submittals, basic area take offs, energy specifications, field reporting.
  • Edit and review energy specifications and provided guidelines
  • Observe and understand the project process including: phases, reason being, and project timelines
  • Complete verification of plans for overarching compliance; manage internal meetings
  • Develop technical specifications for sustainability goals, proactively manage client expectations, and lead client meetings
  • Meet all requirements to serve as a technical assistant: manage small project schedules within time estimates, develop energy specifications, preliminary energy models, and project verifications
  • Use sustainable insight to contribute to project ideas, and support efforts toward balancing work across the team
  • Share knowledge at team meetings particularly new information in the sustainability field at least once a year
Assessment (40% of role):
  • Conduct accurate, consistent field measurements using assessment tools (Level, laser measure, etc.)
  • Print plans and reports
  • Notice and identify trends as they relate across multiple locations or in a specialty area of work/focus; provide practical solutions for the broader team
  • Complete a self-review of work quality
  • Follow established schedules; communicate promptly when there are issues with schedules for on site assessment
  • Coordinate schedules for project visibility, and help correct schedule issues and coordinate conflicts
Architecture (10% of role):
  • Spot check of field measurements and flag egregious errors
  • Follow field measurement requirements to produce base drawings; understand basic documents required for submittals, self check work, and deliver accurate redline comments
  • Possess basic understanding of construction documents and project scope (drawings and specifications) and how to review them with supervision
  • Familiarity with Technical Specializations
  • Establish NCARB file; track Architectural Professional hours for eventual licensure
  • Coordinate consultant information into drawings
  • Understand codes and code relationships to buildings
  • Understand the connection of various drawings across documents and how one change impacts the other areas; demonstrate a strong understanding of HUS standards; implement and maintain drawing requirements.
  • Review drawings and specifications for conflicts between architecture and other disciplines with oversight
  • Manage internal meetings and oversee construction administration with less oversight
  • Understand relationship between project schedule, effort, & project costs (internally and externally), and accurately identify ADD services on a project
  • Mentoring younger staff to navigate projects
  • Study for architectural exams, and present internally on technical tools/skills at least once a year
Qualifications:
  • Passion for sustainability and community-minded architecture
  • Consistent organization skills for ease of information retrieval and collaboration
  • Highly organized and able to keep track of and meet deadlines from multiple projects while remaining adaptable to changing demands and priorities
  • Strong collaboration and professional verbal and written communication skills; can clearly communicate about delays, errors found in deliverables, and specialization targets within sustainability or architecture
  • Ability to work well independently
  • After training, manage field assessments and reporting with little oversight
  • Able to spend full days onsite documenting various aspects of a building
  • Interest in performing swing stage façade inspection (training provided)
  • Experience with energy modeling a plus
  • Able to lift/carry approximately 10 lbs
  • Openness to learn
Requirements:
  • 3-6 years of professional related experience with specific experience with architecture and sustainability projects
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field such as architecture/engineering
  • Knowledge and experience with submissions of documents for architectural/sustainability projects.
  • Certification in LEED.
  • Maintain professional conduct and build professional relationships in the architectural industry broadly.
  • A valid driver license and access to a vehicle for site visits
