The i3 Academy Special Education Teacher’s primary responsibility will be to provide specialized instruction to meet the needs of assigned students based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The teacher evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives and follows state-mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students. The teacher will comply with the federal, state, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.

Job Function and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
• Teach and mentor students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one to address skill deficits
• Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress
• Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals
• Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
• Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to design accommodations for regular curricula as needed, and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments
• Participate in required special education meetings on a regular basis
• Conduct assessment of student learning and use results to plan for instructional activities and teaching plans
• Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
• Supervise and mentor aides and paraprofessionals as well as plan instructional activities and interventions these individuals will implement with assigned students
• Use technology in teaching/learning process
• Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal assessment
• Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP
• Be a positive role model for students, and support mission of i3 Academy
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
• Collaborate with administration in regards to student behavior as applicable. This includes assistance during crisis situations and de-escalating conflicts as well as the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans
• Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to the student’s IEP and behavior intervention plan as appropriate
• Prepare and help students transition from grade-to-grade
• Consult school staff and outside resource providers regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students
• Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as required
• Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers
• Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
• Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
• Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
• Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers (specifically meeting timelines and deadlines)
• Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required
• Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
• Maintain confidentiality
• Other reasonable duties as assigned by supervisor

Candidate Qualification: 

• Masters degree (Preferred)
• Alabama certificate in Special Education
