I3 Academy is Hiring a 2024-2025 Middle School Guidance Counselor Near Birmingham, AL

Position Title: Middle School Guidance Counselor

Contract: 10 Months

Employment Status: Full-time, On-site

Qualifications:

  • At least a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in School Counseling or area/field equivalent
  • Valid State of Alabama teaching certificate in the area of school counseling at the appropriate grade level

Reports To: Principal

Job Goals: To help students thrive in an inclusive, equitable school culture that promotes academic, social, and emotional empowerment through collaboration with parents, teachers, administrators, and community resource agencies that partner to promote academic achievement and success, as well as social and emotional wellness

Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Exercise confidentiality and security of student and staff data.
  • Design engaging and relevant learning experiences for students aligned with the comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Moed for Alabama Public Schools
  • Teach the School Counseling curriculum (K-12) face-to-face and virtually as required by school administration 
  • Provide academic guidance to students through conferencing and scheduling to nurture the behaviors and skills that are critical to students’ academic success
  • Provide assistance and support for students who are experiencing social, emotional, and/or behavioral issues that become a barrier to students’ academic growth and success 
  • Provide responsive services to students’ mental health needs and assist those students and families in seeking resources
  • Deliver prevention and intervention lessons to improve educational, attendance, and disciplinary outcomes related to academic development, college and career readiness, and social/emotional needs 
  • Collect, analyze, and share data to develop goals and strategies that support students’ social, emotional, and learning needs
  • Collaborate with school social workers, attendance officers, resource officers, parents, college and career recruiters, and community stakeholders to provide resources that promote student achievement. 
  • Complete and submit referrals to obtain support services for students in need. 
  • Maintain an active role on school leadership and/or academic and behavioral support teams. 
  • Work closely with administrators, faculty, and staff to promote a safe and healthy learning environment for students. 
  • Implement a comprehensive appraisal process that evaluates goals and objectives set for the school year.
  • Develop and implement materials, processes, and procedures for annual course selection by new students, rising 9th graders, and currently-enrolled students 
  • Remain current on guidelines regarding Career and Technical Education courses and programs.
  • Maintain and post updated lessons, announcements, and resources in Schoology.
  • Conduct individual, small, and large group lessons with all students. 
  • Attend professional development workshops, programs, and conferences to improve knowledge of School Counseling practices and tools. 
  • Coordinate and implement staff development meetings for required training modules as needed. 
  • Utilize various technology programs to deliver classroom lessons, as well as conduct staff development and parent meetings effectively and efficiently. 
  • Reports potential problems, or unusual events, to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel. Report incidents (i.e, fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, bullying, depression, suicide threats, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students and employees
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. High School Counselor
  •  Perform other duties assigned by supervisor, administrator, or principal.

Primary Physical Demands:

  • See on a continuous basis within less than a few feet away and more than a few feet away 
  • Hear on a continuous basis within less than a few feet away and more than a few feet away 
  • Speak frequently and clearly
  • Transition from various positions: standing, sitting, walking, kneeling or crouching. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, walk/run in a drill or emergency situation
  • Reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling objects up to 25 pounds with or without assistance
  • Agility to operate computer and other digital hardware
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers for word processing

Typical Work Environment:

  • Academic and professional for all ages
  • Primarily indoors with varying temperatures
  • Noise level is generally moderate 
  • Access to telecommunications
