Location: Boulder, CO

Description: The Network Research Engineer will provide full-time, Hybrid (4 days on-site, 1 day remote) support for the advanced cellular network research and development operations of the CRAIN (Communications Research and Innovation Network) laboratory at the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS). The primary responsibilities include testing, configuring, and optimizing new and prototype cellular network equipment, software, and features to support policy development and future industry deployments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Configure, test, and troubleshoot IT equipment including servers, routers, switches, and specialized cellular network testing gear.
- Prototype, integrate, and evaluate advanced cellular network technologies such as software-defined networks, 5G, and edge computing.
- Deploy, configure, and optimize cutting-edge cellular network hardware and software.
- Design and execute tests related to cellular network performance, interoperability, and integration.
- Maintain cellular network equipment, including patching and updates.
- Provide on-site support for the laboratory's cellular network infrastructure and virtual environments.
- Capture and analyze network traffic data.
- Monitor network health and coordinate with stakeholders on changes or maintenance.
- Contribute to research papers and technical documentation.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 4 years of network engineering experience in a work and lab environment
- Hands-on experience with Cisco switches, routers, BGP and VLAN.
- Knowledge of VMware virtual networks, ESXi, and vCenter
- Proficient in IT networking skills, including IP management, virtual networks, subnets, firewalls, and tools like Infoblox.
- CCNP - Cisco Certified Network Professional AWS Certified Advanced Networking
- CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) or equivalent certification and/or documented experience
- LFCS (Linux Foundation Certified Systems Administrator) or equivalent certification and/or documented experience
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate
- RHCSA - Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator
- Firewall certification (Palo Alto/ Cisco)
- AWS Certified Advanced Networking
- Experience working with modern configuration management tools.
- 6 years of network engineering experience in a work and lab environment
- Experience or exposure to VMware, Nutanix, RHEV, AWS/Azure networking.
- Experience with cloud computing, Datacenter, AWS/Azure or GCP networking.
- Experience with firewall configurations, troubleshooting and CLI experience.
- Exposure with DDI Tools, such as Infoblox
- Experience with server administration (Windows/Linux) Firewall configuration and troubleshooting (ex: Palo Alto/ Cisco based hardware)
- Prior experience on 5G cellular network or 5G core network functions are desirable.
- Experience with telecom equipment from one or more the following manufacturers: Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Attention to detail and ability to document system configurations and changes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Adaptability to changing requirements and technologies.
